John R. Williams Four-Ball: Joel Durrance, Justin Grant win four-team playoff

Joel Durrance and Justin Grant won a four-team playoff for the Mid-Amateur title, while Michael Anderson and Dave Vaclav closed with a 66 to win the Senior division

Joel Durrance and Justin Grant won the Mid-Amateur division of the John R. Williams Four-Ball in a four-team playoff at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY.

Durrance and Grant finished at 5-under 205 after rounds of 65-72-68 and secured the title on the first extra hole.

Blake Vinson and Liam Logan (69-68-68), Crawford Reeves and Corbin Mills (69-68-68), and Patrick Frodigh and Danny Frodigh (67-68-70) also finished at 205 to force the playoff.

Jack Barber and Mike Perchak (66-71-69) and Richard Donegan and Joseph Latowski (67-70-69) finished one shot back at 4-under 206.

Senior

The Senior division was far less complicated.

Michael Anderson and Dave Vaclav followed rounds of 66 and 68 with another 5-under 66 to finish at 13-under 200, winning by nine shots.

Kevin VandenBerg and Ken Hudson (71-69-69) and Dave Fries and Todd Schmitt (72-68-69) tied for second at 4-under 209.

Brian Harris and Lee Crannell finished fourth at 1-under 212 after rounds of 71-69-72, while first-round co-leaders John Gabler and Billy Joe Tolliver slipped to fifth at even-par 213 after a closing 76.

Anderson and Vaclav were the only Senior team to finish double digits under par, turning their three-shot 36-hole lead into a convincing victory with the lowest final-round score among the leading teams.


Round 1 report -

Kyle Downey and Brandon Grzywacz moved into the lead after the second round of the John R. Williams Four-Ball at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY.

Mid-Amateur

Downey, of Fairport, NY, and Grzywacz, of Pinehurst, NC, followed consecutive rounds of 3-under 67 to reach 6-under 134, giving them a one-shot advantage heading into the final round.

Patrick Frodigh and Danny Frodigh are tied for second at 5-under 135 after rounds of 67 and 68. First-round co-leaders Cameron Crawford and David Jennings joined them at 5-under after following their opening 65 with a 70.

Three teams sit another shot back at 4-under 136. Andrew Fedele and Nick Sortino posted a second straight 68, while Ollie Cordeiro and Brian Isztwan followed their opening 66 with a 70. Thomas Holmes and Ryan Blackburn, who shared the first-round lead after a 65, shot 71.

The leaderboard remains tightly packed, with six teams separated by only two shots entering the final round.

Senior

Michael Anderson and Dave Vaclav made the biggest move in the Senior division, following their opening 66 with a 4-under 68 to take the outright lead at 8-under 134.

They will begin the final round three shots clear of first-round co-leaders John Gabler and Billy Joe Tolliver, who shot 71 to sit second at 5-under 137.

Paul Royak and Bob Royak are third at 3-under 139 after rounds of 67 and 72.

Three teams share fourth at 2-under 140: Dave Fries and Todd Schmitt (72-68), Brian Harris and Lee Crannell (71-69), and Kevin VandenBerg and Ken Hudson (71-69).

Four teams are tied atop a crowded Mid-Amateur leaderboard after the opening round of the John R. Williams Four-Ball at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY.

Mid-Amateur Division

Cameron Crawford and David Jennings, Jeff Mallette and Ryan Mallette, Joel Durrance and Justin Grant, and Thomas Holmes and Ryan Blackburn each opened with 5-under 65s to share the lead.

The leaders have little separation from the chasing pack, with three teams sitting just one shot behind at 4-under 66.

Jack Barber and Mike Perchak, Dave Hanes and Billy Hanes, and Ollie Cordeiro and Brian Isztwan share fifth heading into the second round.

With seven teams separated by a single shot, the Mid-Amateur division remains wide open. Neither the 2024 nor the 2025 Mid-Amateur champions are in the field this year, ensuring a different champion will be crowned at Oak Hill.

Senior Division

The Senior competition also has a share of the lead, with John Gabler and Billy Joe Tolliver joining Michael Anderson and Dave Vaclav at the top after matching 5-under 66s.

Paul Royak and Bob Royak are alone in third after opening with a 4-under 67, one shot behind the co-leaders.

Three teams share fourth at 1-under 70. Paul Favorito and Chris Straley, Ken Ogden and Jerry Gunthorpe, and Wade Sarkis and Jim Scorse are four shots off the lead.
