ICYMI: Oregon takes Bandon Dunes Championship

Ducks and San Jose State's Caleb Shetler withstand challenging conditions on the Sheep Ranch Course

One thing is for certain when playing at Bandon Dunes, it's not going to be easy. Wind, rain and the challenges of navigating around the links-style courses can be both immensely pleasurable and downright maddening.

The Oregon Ducks made the most out of their two and a half-hour drive from Eugene to the southern coast of the state earlier this week, winning the 15-team Bandon Dunes Championship which was contested on the Sheep Ranch Course.

Led by the top-10 finishes of Greyson Leach, Greg Solhaug, Oven Avrit and Nate Stember, the Ducks claimed the team title with an 11-over score of 863, which was two-strokes clear on San Jose State at 13-over 865. Kansas, ranked 18th by Golfweek/Sagarin, finished third at 866 with Utah fourth at 873.

Oregon posted the tournament's low round at 4-under 280 on the final day to outdistance the Spartans by two strokes. Yuki Moriyama's five birdies on the back nine led to a 3-under 68 while Avrit and Stember carded rounds of 69 and 70 to pace the Ducks in the final round.

"We battled and fought through some challenging circumstances," said Oregon head coach Casey Martin. "Playing competitive golf at Bandon Dunes is extremely difficult."

San Jose State's Caleb Shetler captured his first collegiate win with a final round 68 (-3) to finish with an overall score of 209 (-4) to lead the Spartans to a runner-up finish. It was the first tournament win for San Jose State player since Sean Yu won the Visit Stockton Pacific Invite in 2019.
