Griffin Rhoads wins the Gobbler Amateur at Sewailo

Following a course-record-tying 63 in the second round, the Arizona sophomore finishes off a seven-stroke win in Tucson

Griffin Rhoads, riding the momentum from his second-round course-record-tying 63 (-9), carded a final round 67 (-5) to finish at -11 to win the Seventh Gobbler Amateur at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson.

Rhoads, who plays collegiately at Arizona, bested Northwestern-bound Niall Shiels Donegan by seven shots. Alex Cobb, a senior at Chattanooga, finished third at 3-under.

Rhoads was 4-over for the tournament as he stood on the 18th tee box on Monday, but a birdie on the closing hole ignited a heater that saw the Huntington Beach, Calif. native play 37 holes in an amazing 15-under par, tying the Sewailo course record in the process.

"I’m out here all the time and know the guys here well," said Rhoads. "It's good to represent not just U of A but Sewailo.

"The first round was more mental issue. I wasn’t hitting the ball bad, I was just beating myself up. The second round I just stuck to my process and kept trying to get lower and lower. Honestly, today it was easier coming off that big day with the big lead. There was no reason I shouldn’t have been confident. It was definitely nice to have the cushion.”

The Gobbler Amateur is the sixth tournament in the 2022-23 Troon Saguaro Amateur Series. The next event in the Series will be the Desert Amateur, December 2-4 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, just south of Phoenix.
