Gordon Sargent defends his Alabama State Amateur title

Vanderbilt commit Gordon Sargent is now 41 under par in his back-to-back Alabama State Amateur wins

Gordon Sargent of Birmingham. Ala. defended his title to claim victory as the 105th Alabama State Amateur Champion. He took a five stroke lead into the final round on the strength of a nine-under-par 62 and finished atop the leaderboard at 17-under 267.

“I was looking forward to the task of defending this week,” Sargent says. “I ended up making ten birdies this afternoon, when my putter got hot. That was a pretty good feeling. I can’t thank the AGA enough for what they’ve done. It’s pretty special to have my name on the trophy twice, especially when the field was so great.”

Last year the Vanderbilt commit set the tournament scoring record at 24 under par, and he is now an amazing 41 under par over the last two Alabama State Amateurs.

Connor Newton of Auburn finished second, posting a final round two-under-par 69 and carded 14-under 270 for the Championship.

“It felt good,” Newton says. “This is the first time I’ve been in contention, so I thought I handled myself well. I had a fun week.”

Ford Goldasich of Homewood posted two-under-par 69 for the final round, to claim third place. He finished eight-under 276 for the championship.

“This week I just really hit the ball well, and I put it on the greens,” Goldasich says. “I had some good up and downs. It feels amazing.”

In 2020, Gordon became the youngest player in the modern era to be named the State Amateur Champion. He is the first back-to-back champion since 2015. Sargent is the 2020 Alabama Men’s Amateur Player of the Year, as well as the 2020 Alabama State Boys Junior Player of the Year.
