Gingerich pads St. Augustine Amateur lead to 6 shots

Ty Gingerich follows up his first-round 62 with a 67 to take charge at St. Johns Golf Club

Ty Gingerich shot a 3-under 67 to pad his lead to 6 shots heading into the final round of the St. Augustine Amateur at St. Johns Golf Club in St. Augustine, Fla. Gingerich, a freshman at the University of Cincinnati, missed out on qualifying for with his team for the Hoosier Invitational, so he made the nine-hour journey to Florida and, after getting only four hours of sleep, set the course record in the first round with a 62. Related: Gingerich takes St. Augustine Amateur lead with course-record 62 Playing with Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Canada and Paul Tesori, who caddies on the PGA Tour for Webb Simpson, Gingerich extended his lead with three birdies on the front nine. He took a seven-shot lead to the final hole but made his first bogey of the tournament to finish 11 under. Yellamaraju shot an even-par 70 to fall into a third-place tie, while Tesori came in with a 72 which leaves him tied for ninth. 29-year-old Michael Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. shot a 68 to pull into solo second, six shots behind Gingerich. At 5 under, Smith leads the Mid-Amateur competition by four shots over Tesori and Duke Butler IV of Ponte Vedra. Ryder Sutcliffe of Jupiter, Fla. had the day's low round, a 6-under 64, to move into a third place tie with Yellamaraju and Juan Iturra of St. Augustine. Play concludes with Sunday's final round.
