Gavin Moynihan wins Irish Open Amateur

DUBLIN, Ireland — For the second time in four years, Gavin Moynihan is the Irish Open Amateur champion. Moynihan, the 20-year-old from Dublin, won in 2012 as a 17-year-old to put himself on the map. Now, back at Royal Dublin, he grabbed his second national title in his hometown. His important round was Saturday's third as Moynihan carded 65, the lowest round of the tournament, to go into the final round tied for the lead with Kevin LeBlanc. LeBlanc, a 17-year-old and fellow clubmate of Moynihan's at Royal Dublin, finished in a tie for third after shooting 78 in the final round. “Even a few weeks back, I just couldn’t wait to get back to Royal Dublin,” Moynihan told the Irish Times. Groups battled winds gusting up to 40 mph in the final round, but Moynihan's 74 withstood the rest of the field. Placing second for the second straight year was Cormac Sharvin of Ardglass, who finished in the runner-up position last week at the Lytham Trophy in England. Scotland's Ewen Ferguson shot one of just six under par rounds on Sunday to tie for third with LeBlanc. Moynihan likely secured his spot on the 2015 Walker Cup team with his win.
