Five takeaways from U.S. Women's Amateur stroke play

The 36-hole stroke play qualifying is over, so let's take a look at some of the storylines heading into match play

With the 36-hole qualifying at the U.S. Women's Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., now complete and match play starting Wednesday, it is time to look back on the stroke play portion and see who performed the best and what storylines stood out.

Lauren Kim records the round of the championship

Kim shot a second round 5-under 66 to shoot the low round of the championship with five birdies and no bogeys. She finished the stroke play portion T4 at 1-under after a first-round 4-over 75.

Kiara Romero bounces back

2023 U.S. Girls’ Junior Champion Kiara Romero was 5-over par through eleven holes in the first round. From there, she played her remaining 25 holes of stroke play in 6-under to finish stroke play 1-under and T4.

 

Asterisk Talley continues her great play

Asterisk Talley is putting together one of the best seasons of anyone this year, and she is showing no signs of slowing down at Southern Hills. Talley finished stroke play 1-under and T4 heading into match play. 

She is coming off a win at the 2024 Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and the 2024 USGA Women's Four-Ball, a runner-up finish at the U.S. Girls' Amateur Championship, low amateur honors at the U.S. Women's Open, and a top-ten finish at the 2024 Augusta National Women's Amateur.

Top players move onto match play

Rachel Kuehn, the No. 1 ranked player in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com Women's Rankings, earned a spot in the match play portion. According to the USGA, 12 of the top 13 top 25 ranked players in the field made the match play and the 9-over cut.  

Curtis Cup members start strong

After the championship, the five remaining spots on the 2024 United States Curtis Cup team will be filled out. However, Zoe Campos, Catherine Park, and Jasmine Koo have already made the team, earning the first three spots. 

All three players made the cut in stroke play to move onto match play, with Campos leading the way at 1-under and T4.
