Charlie Dubiel is a New England transplant from Juno Beach, Fla. But Dubiel, a rising junior at Cornell, seems to be fitting in in the golf landscape. After an opening 65 at the Quechee (Vt.) Club, Dubiel leads the New England Amateur.
Dubiel’s round included four front-nine birdies. He sandwiched his only bogey on the back (at No. 15) between two more birdies.
Already this summer, Dubiel played the Monroe Invitational, finishing T-42. He was 13th at the New Year’s Invitational in January. Dubiel has also competed in – and finished among the top 15 – a the Francis Ouimet Memorial each of the past two years. He won the Cape Cod Junior Classic in 2015.
Needless to say, Northeast golf is hardly unfamiliar to him.
Close behind Dubiel, Jeffrey Giguere, who plays out of Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island, had a 4-under 68 to play his way into solo second.
Past New England Am champ Bobby Leopold, another Wannamosett member, is tied for third after a 3-under 69. Nicholas Cummings, who is headed to Boston College in the fall, is also at that number.
