Last week, Dossey’s teammate Garrett May won the Northeast Amateur. The week before that? Ryan Grider won the Texas Amateur.
Now it’s Dossey’s turn. The North & South is not only a major feather in the cap of Dossey, who will be a senior at Baylor this fall, but it potentially bodes well for another event this summer. The long-running North & South, played at Pinehurst No. 2 (but with a stroke-play round at No. 4 included this week), is like a preview for the U.S. Amateur. That tournament, the pinnacle of the amateur summer, will be played in August. Dossey still must qualify in.
“It’s number one,” said Dossey, when asked about where the North & South title ranks among his career accomplishments. “I haven’t really won outside of college golf on my own. I’ve actually only made two cuts before this amateur tournament, so I had no expectations, but it was a fun week, a special week.”
On a double-round Saturday, Dossey first defeated Blake Taylor, 2 and 1, in the semifinals, then caught Georgia Tech’s Noah Norton in the final match. Dossey won four of the first eight holes, and eventually prevailed, 5 and 4.
“He’s a great player, and I didn’t want to give him any holes,” said Dossey, whose younger brother Luke was on his bag for the second-straight day. “I didn’t make a bogey all day. I just hit it well in the middle of the greens, putted great; it was a really good round.”
