GARDEN CITY, NY (May 21, 2017) - After a weekend of tight matches Daniel MacDonald has won the 108th playing of the Walter J. Travis Invitational hosted by the Garden City Golf Club.
MacDonald, the two-seed, concluded his run to the title with a 2&1 victory over No. 5 Michael Kelley in the title match on gorgeous May afternoon.
MacDonald reached the finals with a 2&1 win in the semifinals over defending champion No. 6 Trevor Randolph, in the quarterfinals he defeated seven-seed Darin Goldstein 2&1 and in the Round of 16 he handled 15-seed Hal Berman 1 up.
Kelley made his way into the championship match on the back of a 2 up semifinal win against No. 16 Jay Blumenfeld who defeated top-seed John Sawin in the Round of 16. Sawin earned the top spot in the match play bracket after firing a qualifying round of 66.
The remainder of Kelley's run to the title included a 3&1 triumph over No. 4 Brett Williams in the quarterfinals and a 1 up win over No. 12 Gareth Bohill.
In the final of the Devereaux Emmet flight, Brad Wilder (last year's runner-up in the Championship) beat Garrett Engel 4&3. In the Charles B. Macdonald Flight, Matt Mattare beat Mike Connors 3&2. In the Robert T. Jones Flight, Bradley Rock defeated Steve White 1 up, and in the William H. Taft Flight, George Boudria beat Tristan Lewis 2&1.
In the Senior compeition, Kenny Bakst won the title by defeating George Zahringer.
