Coody tops deep field for South Beach International Am title

Pierceson Coody only needed a bogey on the final hole at Miami Beach Golf Club to secure a one-stroke victory

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 22, 2018) – Pierceson Coody only needed a bogey on the final hole at Miami Beach Golf Club to secure a one-stroke victory at the 2018 South Beach International Amateur. Entering the final round, the Texas freshman enjoyed a six-stroke lead after his brilliant 64 in Round 3.

Coody was 2 under after seven holes of the third round, which saw 30 mph constant winds with gusts of up to 48 mph before play was stopped. After restarting his round the next morning, Coody played the final 10 holes at a blistering 5 under par. His final-round 74 got him to 11-under 272. It was just enough to win the crystal trophy.

Venezuela’s Manuel Torres, who plays his collegiate golf locally at Lynn University, challenged Coody’s six-shot lead when he went birdie, eagle, birdie from Nos. 15-17 before succumbing to an 18th-hole bogey to miss a playoff by one shot. Torres finished the week at 10 under.

England’s Jake Burnage, who was playing one of his last amateur events before he turns professional, fired an even-par 71 to reach 8-under 275 and secure sole possession of third place.
