Connor Williams wins Agave Amateur in Indio

Arizona State commit from Escondido, Calif. posts one-stroke victory at Shadow Hills in Indio

Connor Williams strung together three under-par rounds to win the Agave Amateur which wrapped up Monday at Shadow Creek Golf Club in Indio, Calif.

The Arizona State commit from Escondido, Calif. posted rounds of 69-66-71 to finish at 8-under, which was good for a one-stroke victory over Alexander Gibalevich, who plays collegiately at the University of Denver.

Williams and Gibalevich were neck-and-neck throughout the day and after Gibalevich missed an eight-foot par putt on the final hole, Williams could finally celebrate his first amateur victory.

“This win means a lot as it is my first amateur win and knowing I can compete with collegiate and older players," said Williams, who is a senior at San Pasqual High School in Escondido. "It gives me the confidence I can compete on the amateur level and still win after facing adversity. "I had a really good stretch of golf in my last 16 holes the second round, shooting 29 on the back after I was three-over after two holes. I stayed patient and took my opportunities when they came to me this week.”

Shane Muldowney final round of 5-under 66, which was the lowest round of the tournament, earned the UC Davis player third place at 6-under.

The Agave Amateur is the eighth tournament in the 2022-23 Troon Saguaro Amateur Series. The next event will be the inaugural Coachella Amateur which gets underway on Wednesday at Terra Lago Golf Club's North Course.
