Cape Province Amateur: Jean Pierre Van Der Watt wins in a playoff

Van Der Watt took down Dan Copeman to get the wire-to-wire win after both golfers finished 12-under

He needed extra holes, but Jean Pierre Van Der Watt won the Cape Province Amateur Open Championship at George Golf Club in George, Garden Route, South Africa. Van Der Watt defeated Dan Copeman in a two-man playoff after both golfers finished at 12-under.

Van Der Watt got off to a blazing start, shooting a first-round 8-under 64 to set the pace, and finished with rounds of 64-69-71 to get to 12-under. In the final round, he started 3-under through the first three holes after making birdies on Holes No. 1, 2, and 3, but recorded three bogeys and just one more birdie in his final round to allow Copeman to tie it up after 54 holes. 

Copeman shot a final round 4-under 68 to get to 12-under and finished with rounds of

Damian Osner and Daniel Bennett finished T3 at 10-under. Travis Procter and Jan-Hendrik Nieuwoudt finished T5 at 8-under, and Meyer Pauw finished in solo seventh place at 6-under.

Van Der Watt is currently ranked No. 195 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, breaking into the top 200 with this win. Van Der Watt finished T2 in the 2024 South African Stroke Play and the final 32 in the South African Amateur Championship.
