The two finalists battled to a standstill through 36 holes Saturday before Stone prevailed on the 39th hole. Stone reached the final by defeating Brady McHenry in his semifinal, while Emberson advanced past Will Tanaka. The victory caps a marathon week for Stone, who survived a 20-hole test in the Round of 16 before grinding through three more matches to claim the title.

LA HABRA HEIGHTS, Calif. — Kailer Stone of Alameda is the 115th California Amateur champion, outlasting Max Emberson of Thousand Oaks on the third hole of sudden death to win a 36-hole final that stretched to 39 holes Saturday at Hacienda Golf Club.

The two finalists battled to a standstill through the scheduled 36 holes, neither able to land the decisive blow over a full day of golf. Stone finally closed it out in extra holes, capping a week-long run that began with a 20-hole survival test in the Round of 16 and ended with him hoisting the trophy in Southern California.
