    Play suspended with amateur Drew Brockwell, pro Mark Lawrence tied at 6-under

    Second-round play was suspended at 5:25 pm due to lightning in the area with amateur Drew Brockwell and professional Mark Lawrence tied atop the leaderboard at 6-under par. Brockwell, from Lakeside Park Club, is even through seven holes after opening with a 64.

    Lawrence, representing Hermitage Country Club, has made a move with a 3-under 25 through seven holes after starting with a 67. Justin LaRue sits alone in third at 4-under through 13 holes, while a three-way tie at 3-under includes amateurs Kyle Bailey and Talon Dingledine (both even today through seven) and Jay Woodson (3-under through 11).

Drew Brockwell took full advantage of an early tee time Friday, carding a 6-under 64 to open a three-shot lead after the first round of the Virginia State Open at Independence Golf Club.

The former Virginia Tech standout, a Chesterfield, Va., native and Lakeside Park Club member, made seven birdies in his opening round to lead the field before deteriorating air quality from Canadian wildfire smoke enveloped the Richmond area later in the day. By the afternoon, a Code Purple Air Quality Index alert had been issued for the Richmond region, with conditions classified as "very unhealthy," leaving the later groups to contend with significantly more difficult playing conditions.
