Lightning forced players to return Sunday morning to complete the weather-delayed second round, but once play resumed, Mark Lawrence Jr. wasted little time taking control of the State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club. The Hermitage Country Club professional completed a flawless, bogey-free 9-under 63 before returning a few hours later to close with a 5-under 66, finishing at 14-under 196 and four shots clear of the field. Lawrence capped his championship in style, playing the back nine in 32, highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 14th that effectively put the tournament out of reach.
The biggest challenge came from Drew Brockwell, the Virginia Tech alum and Lakeside Park Club amateur, who refused to let the champion coast to the finish. Brockwell, a Chesterfield, Virginia native and former Hokie standout, opened with a tournament-best 64 and remained firmly in contention after a bogey-free 68 in the interrupted second round. A double bogey on the fourth hole Sunday briefly stalled his momentum, but Brockwell answered with birdies at the seventh and ninth before grinding out a steady back-nine 35 to finish alone in second at 10-under 200.
Lawrence's victory adds another chapter to one of Virginia golf's most accomplished résumés. A Richmond native, he starred at Virginia Tech after beginning his collegiate career at Auburn, earned All-ACC honors, reached the semifinals of the 2017 U.S. Amateur, and swept both the Virginia State Amateur and State Open titles in 2020 before turning professional. Now representing Hermitage Country Club, Lawrence once again demonstrated why he has long been one of the Commonwealth's premier players, pairing an almost flawless 63 with a closing round that featured six birdies and an eagle.
Jay Woodson finished third at 6-under 204, while amateurs Gus Lascola and Scott Shingler shared fourth alongside professional George Duangmanee at 5-under 205. But the week belonged to Lawrence, whose patient play through a weather-disrupted weekend and brilliant final 36 holes earned him another Virginia State Open title in convincing fashion.
