Bina maintains lead after windy third round at Dixie Amateur

The wind howled in South Florida on Thursday, and still no one could catch Dixie leader Carey Bina

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (Dec. 20, 2018) – Three rounds into the Dixie Amateur, nobody can knock Carey Bina off the top of the leaderboard. Even as gusting winds in South Florida drove up scores across the board at Eagle Trace on Thursday, the advantage remained with Bina.

Bina, the 23-year-old from Villanova, Pa., started the week with a bogey-free, 6-under 66 at partner course Heron Bay. The golf has gotten harder, but Bina has managed to hold on. A 10th-hole eagle highlighted a second-round even-par 72, and on Thursday, Bina finished with 2-over 74 despite two double bogeys.

After graduating from Elon University last spring, Bina has temporarily moved to South Florida to work on his game in hopes of chasing a professional career.

Behind Bina, Linus Lo of Heathrow Florida posted an even-par 72 that was one of the best rounds of the day (no player went under par on Thursday). Lo is solo second, and trails Bina by two.

Two players are tied for third at even par. Nicholas Cummings, of Weston, Mass., is also a temporary Florida resident who is working on his game away from a harsh Northern winter. The 2015 U.S. Amateur qualifier will join the Boston College roster next fall. Jonathan Keppler, of Marietta, Ga., is a redshirt junior at Florida State.
