Ben Hogan Collegiate: Cole Sherwood powers Vanderbilt past North Carolina

A birdie on No. 18 from Cole Sherwood gave Vanderbilt the outright team win over UNC and forced an individual playoff.

Cole Sherwood only needed two holes to earn the sweep for Vanderbilt at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Tex.

Sherwood birdied the final hole to give Vanderbilt a one-shot win over North Carolina and force a playoff against Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech.

Then, on the first playoff hole (No. 18), Sherwood made another birdie to win the individual competition.

Vanderbilt finished at 16-under, holding off a valiant final-round effort from North Carolina, who finished 15-under and shot 10-under in the final round.

Oklahoma came into the final round with a five-shot lead over Arizona State, but a final round 14-over sent them into solo fifth place.

Arizona State finished in solo third place at 13-under, and Oregon finished in solo fourth place at 12-under. Oregon shot a 9-under final round.

In the individual competition, Sherwood and Lamprecht shot 7-under to force the playoff. Sherwood won on the first hole.

David Ford of North Carolina and Drew Goodman of Oklahoma State finished T5 at 5-under.
