Aussie Doull takes Southeastern Amateur lead with opening 64

Jordan Doull (Perth, Australia) shot a 6-under 64 at the Country Club of Columbus to take the first-round lead in the 90th Southeastern Amateur. Doull came from Western Australia to play college golf at Columbus State University, where he just completed his sophomore year. On Wednesday, he went bogey-free and didn't even have a 5 on his card. He started out with birdies at the only two par 5s on the course (the 1st and the 4th) and got to six under through 11 holes before parring in. He will take a one-shot lead over four players -- Ryan Hall of the University of South Carolina, mid-amateur and former Florida State player Rusty Mosley, Charlie Miller of Ole Miss, and Benjamin Carr of Georgia Southern. Carr, a Country Club of Columbus member, finished third in the championship a year ago when he was still a high school player. Michael Shears of Vanderbilt University and Ford Clegg of Mississippi State were another shot back at 66. In all, 21 of the 90 players in the field were able to break par on the classic Donald Ross course, which measures only 6500 yards but defends itself well with its small, sloping greens. The championship continues on Thursday with the second round, with the field cut after Friday's round to the low 60 players and ties for the final round on Saturday.
