Arizona State wins at Trinity Forest, picks up second win of fall

The Sun Devils also claimed individual medalist Alex del Rey.

As teams jockey for position early in this fall college season, Arizona State added its name to the list of programs that has racked up back-to-back wins. The Sun Devils finished on top of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Tuesday, which is even more impressive considering that three team members have already departed for Shanghai, China, to tee it up in the Asia-Pacific Amateur this week, where a Masters invitation is on the line.

Those three players – Chun An Yu, Won Jun Lee and James Leow – were all in the lineup earlier this month when their team won the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

At Trinity Forest in Dallas, site of the PGA Tour’s AT&T Byron Nelson Championship, Arizona State played its way to 30 under for three rounds. On Tuesday, Arizona State outscored SMU, the home team, 9 under to 5 under. That was ultimately the difference, as SMU finished the tournament solo second at 26 under.

To make the week sweeter for Arizona State, Alex del Rey won the individual title with his 16-under total. The Madrid, Spain native started the final round with an eagle, added three consecutive birdies from Nos. 5-7, and closed with an even-par 35 on the back nine to throw out a closing 66. It followed opening rounds of 67-64.

Teammate Cameron Sisk, who won the Maui Jim individual title, was third at 8 under.

Houston, playing not far from home, was 17 under and finished third, while Rice got it to 7 under for fourth and Little Rock rounded out the under-par scorers with a 6-under total.

Other top undefeated teams include Georgia Tech and Baylor, who shared the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational title over the weekend.
