By Design: Amateur Tournaments on the Courses of Golf's Greatest Architects

Great golf courses are the work of named authors. Long before a tournament is scheduled or a trophy is engraved, someone routed the holes, shaped the greens, and decided where the trouble would live. Ask a serious amateur about their favorite venues and you won't hear a list of tournaments — you'll hear a list of architects: MacKenzie, Ross, Tillinghast, Raynor, Dye, Hanse.

So we asked a simple question of the AmateurGolf.com database — all 5,600-plus events in it: where can you actually tee it up on the work of the game's greatest designers? Not watch. Not tour. Compete. It turns out the answer is: an astonishing number of places. The Anderson Memorial is contested on Tillinghast's Winged Foot West. The Coleman Invitational is played at Donald Ross's Seminole. There is a tournament literally named the Macdonald Cup on the Macdonald–Raynor course at Yale, and a Dye Junior Invitational on Pete Dye's Crooked Stick.

What follows is a working tour through six of the most important names in golf architecture and the amateur events our database ties to their courses — with a bias toward the ones you can still enter. Consider it a bucket list with entry forms attached.

Donald Ross

1872–1948 · Dornoch, Scotland → Pinehurst, North Carolina

No architect's fingerprints are on more American amateur golf than Donald Ross's. He built or reworked some 400 courses, and his crowned, run-off greens still decide championships a century later. Pinehurst No. 2 is his cathedral — but the deeper you look, the more of the amateur calendar turns out to be Ross.

Also in the book: the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic at Mid Pines, the Holston Hills Invitational (Knoxville), and — for a two-for-one — the U.S. Senior Challenge on the Donald Ross Course at French Lick, a resort that also owns a Pete Dye course (more on him below).

Alister MacKenzie

1870–1934 · The camouflage artist who drew Cypress Point & Augusta

MacKenzie designed fewer courses than Ross, but the hit rate is unmatched — Cypress Point, Augusta National, Pasatiempo, Crystal Downs. His philosophy was that a great hole should thrill the scratch player and forgive the hacker on the same afternoon. Two of his California gems host amateur golf we track, and his lone public design in the Midwest anchors one of the busiest college calendars in the country.

A nice piece of trivia: our own Alister MacKenzie Cup was contested at Pasatiempo — the course MacKenzie loved so much he lived in a house alongside the sixth fairway.

A.W. Tillinghast

1876–1942 · The Philadelphian who built the Northeast's proving grounds

If you want to test yourself against the same holes that have decided U.S. Opens, play Tillinghast. His metropolitan New York work — Winged Foot, Baltusrol, Bethpage Black, Quaker Ridge — forms the densest cluster of championship venues in America, and amateurs get real cracks at all of them.

Seth Raynor & C.B. Macdonald

The template men who founded American golf architecture

C.B. Macdonald built the country's first great course — the National Golf Links of America — and his engineer-turned-protégé Seth Raynor carried the "template hole" gospel across the map: the Redan, the Biarritz, the Short. Their courses are cult objects among architecture nerds, and a few of them open the gates for amateur events. Two of those events are named for the men themselves.

The Macdonald Cup is the one to circle: an open event, this September, on the Macdonald–Raynor routing at Yale — one of the boldest, most contour-heavy courses in the country.

Pete Dye

1925–2020 · The provocateur of railroad ties and visual terror

Dye dragged American architecture into the modern era with railroad ties, pot bunkers, and greens that stare you down. His courses are the ones that make amateurs feel like they're on TV — and, this summer, some of them were: the U.S. Women's Amateur was contested on Dye's masterwork, The Honors Course, an event we covered all week.

A bit of AmateurGolf.com history: we ran the Kiawah Island Two-Man on Dye's Ocean Course back in the mid-2000s, years before it became a Ryder Cup and PGA Championship legend.

Gil Hanse

b. 1963 · The modern minimalist restoring — and building — the classics

Hanse is the architect of the moment: the man clubs call to restore their MacKenzies and Rosses, and the designer of new courses good enough to host majors within a few years of opening. His work is where the amateur calendar is heading next, and the database already reflects it.

The bucket list beyond the tee sheet

Some cathedrals keep their gates closed. There is no amateur event in our directory at Cypress Point on the Monterey Peninsula most years, none at Crystal Downs or the Valley Club of Montecito, none at Chicago Golf Club or Camargo or Shoreacres. That's the nature of the most private clubs in America — and part of what makes the events above so precious. When a MacKenzie or a Raynor does open its doors for a championship, entries close fast.
