HATTIESBURG, MS (July 10, 2016) -- Alex Springer of Central Missouri completed a wire-to-wire run as he won the Magnolia Amateur. Springer finished 10-under after three rounds of under-par golf at Hattiesburg Country Club.
The rising senior at Central Missouri fired rounds of 66-67-70 but did make things very interesting during Sunday's final round. Springer began the day leading by two-strokes before faltering on the front nine with four bogeys to fall back to 5-under after starting the day 9-under.
Needing to recover quickly, Springer, a 2015 Division II PING Honorable Mention All-American, responded on the inward nine with five birdies to regain command of the tournament. His first birdie of the day came on the 11th hole and that opened the floodgates with birds coming on Nos. 12, 13, 16 and 17. The run vaulted Springer back to the top of the leaderboard and once he finished with a closing par he was able to sign for a 5-under 31 that sealed the title.
Future Houston Cougar Pryce Beshoory finished second at 9-under following scores of 69-66-69. Beshoory birdied the final hole on Sunday but a bogey on No. 17 proved costly.
Quade Cummins, a rising Oklahoma sophomore, was alone in third place at 7-under. Cummins birdied two of his first three holes to get into the mix but only birdied one hole the rest of the way.
Riley Johnson (Minnesota) was 5-under in fourth while Matias Calderon (Little Rock), Tyler Hitchner (Alabama) and Colin Troxler (Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) were all tied for fifth at 3-under.
