Tar Heels win by 20 in dominant title defense while Niall Sheils Donegan leads another 1-2 finish
No. 11 North Carolina delivered a dominant performance to defend its title at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, posting 32-under 808 (267-264-277) for a 20-shot victory at UNC Finley Golf Club.
The Tar Heels controlled the tournament from the start, finishing well clear of No. 27 Duke, which placed runner-up at 12-under 828 (277-273-278). North Carolina’s B team added to the program’s depth with a third-place finish at 11-under 829 (276-272-281).
In the individual competition, junior Niall Sheils Donegan continued his strong run, carding 12-under 198 (64-67-67) to win by two shots. Playing his first season with UNC, Donegan extended his streak to seven consecutive rounds in the 60s and recorded one of the program’s rare sub-200 performances over 54 holes.
It marked his second straight top finish after placing third at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational last week, where North Carolina also claimed the team title.
Sophomore Grant Roscich completed a Tar Heel 1-2 finish at 10-under 200 (68-61-71). His second-round 61 tied the program’s all-time low and set a new course record at UNC Finley.
Duke junior Bryan Kim finished third at 8-under 202 (69-66-67).

North Carolina placed four players inside the top 10, underlining its depth. Freshman Carson Bertagnole finished 7th at 5-under 205 (66-70-69), while sophomore Sihan Sandhu placed T-10 at 3-under 207 (69-68-70). Sandhu recently won the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational to earn a PGA Tour start at the 3M Open (July 23–26) at TPC Twin Cities.
Statistically, North Carolina led the field in par-4 (4.01) and par-5 scoring (4.49), while also topping the field with 69 birdies, 15 more than Duke.
From top to bottom, the Tar Heels delivered a complete performance, reinforcing their form with back-to-back wins and another commanding showing on home turf.
