North Carolina star prevails in playoff to secure PGA Tour start while Tar Heels set tournament record in 15-shot win
North Carolina sophomore Sihan Sandhu from Ashburn, Va., defeated Georgia Southern North Carolina sophomore Sihan Sandhu of Ashburn, Va., delivered in clutch fashion, rolling in a 3-foot birdie on the third playoff hole to win the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational and earn an exemption into the PGA Tour’s 3M Open (July 23–26) at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn.
Sandhu finished at 15-under 201 (68-67-66) and was matched by Georgia Southern sophomore Thomas Horne, who posted 69-67-65 to force a playoff. Sandhu sealed his second collegiate title with a composed finish under pressure.
Behind him, No. 16 North Carolina delivered a historic team performance, posting a tournament-record 54-under 810 (270-276-264) to win by 15 shots.
The Tar Heels’ total set a new tournament scoring record and marked their fifth title at the event, the second-most in its history. It also continued their strong run at Forest Hills Golf Club.
No. 6 Oklahoma State, last year’s co-champion, finished runner-up at 39-under 825 (284-266-275), while Texas, which shared the title last year, did not compete.
North Carolina placed three players inside the top five, underlining its depth. Junior Niall Sheils Donegan finished T-3 at 14-under 202 (69-68-65), while freshman Carson Bertagnole added a T-5 finish at 13-under 203 (68-71-64).
Pepperdine senior Mahanth Chirravuri shared third at 14-under 202 (68-66-68).
Statistically, North Carolina led the field in par-3 scoring (2.93) and par-4 scoring (3.87) while recording a tournament-best 78 birdies.
From a playoff finish at the top to a record-setting team performance, North Carolina left Augusta with both the trophy and momentum—while Sandhu now takes the next step onto the PGA Tour stage.
Players and coaches will be headed to Augusta National for Monday's practice round as a gift from the tournament.
