Toreros claim first win since 2025 Nick Watney Invitational as BYU freshman Kihei Akina storms from five back to win at 14-under
San Diego captured the R.E. Lamkin Invitational team title with a 26-under 838 total (283-274-281), earning a two-shot victory at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, California.
The win marked San Diego’s first tournament victory since the 2025 Nick Watney Invitational and continued the program’s success at the event after also winning the 2024 edition.
Long Beach State finished runner-up at 24-under 840 (273-290-277), while Brigham Young placed third at 17-under. San Diego State, the defending champions, finished fifth at 13-under (279-286-286).
In the individual competition, BYU freshman Kihei Akina delivered a remarkable final-round surge to win the title at 14-under 202 (67-71-64), finishing one shot ahead of Long Beach State senior Alejandro de Castro, who placed runner-up at 13-under (63-70-70).
Akina began the final round five strokes off the lead but produced the lowest round of the day, firing an 8-under 64 that included six birdies, one eagle and no bogeys. The performance gave the Alpine, Utah native the lowest 54-hole total of his collegiate career and his first individual tournament victory. The result came just four days after Akina made his first PGA Tour cut at the Puerto Rico Open.
San Diego placed three players inside the top 10 to secure the team victory. Graduate student Ian Maspat led the Toreros with a sixth-place finish at 6-under (77-67-66) after closing with back-to-back rounds in the 60s. Freshman Reed Arnaldo finished T-7 at 5-under 211 (70-69-72), while sophomore Cooper Humphreys placed T-9 at 4-under (72-67-73).
