The Missouri freshman birdied the final two holes to secure a one-shot win in California
Trent Mierl of Austin, Tex., needed to birdie his final two holes to win the Coachella Amateur on the North Course at Terra Lago Golf Club in Indio, Calif.
Mierl, a freshman on the University of Missouri golf team, did exactly that to secure the one-shot win. After an eagle from Avery Lazarski on No. 17 gave him a one-shot lead at 10-under, Mierl birdied No. 17 and 18 to get to 11-under. Shaojun Luo entered No. 18 at 11-under after a birdie on No. 17, but he made a bogey on No. 18 to knock him out of a playoff.
Mierl shot a final round 4-under 68 to get to 11-under with rounds of 67-70-68 in the tournament. His 11-under total was good enough to win by one shot over Avery Lazarski of Las Vegas, Nev., and Shaojun Luo of Diamond Bar, Calif.
“I hit the ball really well and found a lot of fairways," Mierl said. "Just tried to hit a lot of greens and let the putter do the work. Just took care of business. It’s good momentum and keep the good golf going. Try to bring some good game toward the team and keep it rolling.”
The leaderboard was tightly packed all day, with as many as seven players within two shots of the lead at some point in the final round. Also in the mix were Carlos Astiazaran of Tucson, Ariz., Jack Dozer of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gabiel Smith of Truckee, Calif.
Astiazaran finished two shots back in solo fourth place, while Dozer and Smith finished T6.
