Roberts took the the lead in the third round and never looked back, winning by two shots and finishing 19-under
Reese Roberts of Dallas won the 115th Texas Amateur Championship at Trinity Forest Golf Club. Roberts carded rounds of 71-63-68-67 over four days to claim the H.L. Edwards Trophy, finishing two strokes ahead of the field.
Names like H.L. Edwards, Will Zalatoris, Bob Estes, Charles Coody, and Ben Crenshaw are among the illustrious Texas Amateur Champions. On Sunday at Trinity Forest Golf, Roberts joined this esteemed list of Texas golfers.
“I can’t even believe it right now. I was just taking it one shot at a time all day and not thinking about the outcome at all but on No. 18 I started thinking about it a little,” said Roberts, laughing.
Roberts, a senior at Dallas Jesuit, secured victory with a 19-under total over four rounds. After sharing the lead following the second round, he took sole possession in the third round, becoming the player to chase on Sunday.
Maintaining a two-shot lead over the field going into the final stretch, Roberts shot a 3-under 33 on the front nine.
A birdie on No. 10 extended his lead to three strokes, which Daniel Choi of Keller narrowed to two strokes again.
Approaching No. 13, Roberts left his drive on the left side of the fairway, aiming toward a green flanked by backside bunkers and a false back that feeds into the No. 14 tee.
His approach just left of the green set up a 15-foot putt through the zoysia grass. Roberts executed with perfect speed, watching the ball drop in for a birdie that felt decisive. A fist pump followed as he headed to the next hole with a four-stroke lead and four holes to play.
After par on No. 14 and No. 15, Roberts reached No. 16 with a three-stroke lead, as Luke Colton of Frisco birdied No. 14.
Splitting the fairway on the Par 5 No. 16, Roberts laid up to the right side of the green, leaving himself a 10-foot birdie putt. With nerves of steel, he sank the putt.
Approaching No. 18 with a three-stroke lead, Roberts split the fairway again before landing his second shot in a greenside bunker. A confident shot out of the bunker set him up for a two-putt to secure the 115th Texas Amateur Championship.
“Of course, emotion was catching up with me,” said the Dallas Jesuit Senior. “When those putts fall and good things happen when there’s not a lot of time left in the round, it’s an adrenaline rush.”
Roberts, graduating in 2025, became the first true high schooler to win the Texas Amateur.
“I had no idea about being the only true high schooler to win, which is pretty cool,” said the Dallas native.
With the victory, Roberts earns exemptions into five Texas Amateurs and the 124th U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
The USGA announced the Texas Amateur as a USGA Exemption Event for the first time, rewarding Affiliated Golf Association champions.
Colton, also a true high schooler, finished second with rounds of 68-69-66-68, 17-under at the Texas Amateur, showcasing his ability to compete at a high level.
Choi secured solo third place with scores of 67-66-70-71, finishing 14-under. The Duke University freshman earned his first Top 5 finish at the Texas Amateur.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Andre Jacobs of League City, Marek Fleming of Tomball, and Trinity Forest Golf Club member Andrew Lawson of Dallas, all finishing at 12-under par.
