Ben Greve shows grace under pressure to win Walter J. Travis Invitational

Greve won two of his matches in extra holes and won the final match 1-up over David Morgan
It was not the easiest path, but Ben Greve won the 2024 Walter J. Travis Invitational at Garden City Golf Club in Garden City, N.Y., after winning all four of his matches. Greve's quarterfinal and semifinal matches went to extra holes, and he won the final match 1-up to secure the victory in the Travis Cup.
Greve, the No. 2 seed, defeated Joseph Deraney 2&1 in the first round, then defeated Cody Paladino in 19 holes in the quarterfinals and defeated Will Davenport in the 19 holes in the semifinals.
In the final match, Greve defeated David Morgan 1-up, clinching the match with a birdie on the final hole.
Greve is ranked No. 440 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com U.S. Rankings and won the 2022 Minnesota Amateur.
In the Dwight Eisenhower Cup, Walker Taylor defeated Matt Sughrue in a thriller, winning in 21 holes. Taylor was 2-up through 14 holes, but birdies on holes No. 15 and 16 tied the match and sent it into extra holes.
Sughrue is ranked No. 11 in the AmateurGolf.com Senior Rankings.
Taylor, the No. 6 seed, defeated Tony Hejna 5&4, defeated Mark Thompson 1-up, defeated Mark McGowan 1-up, and then took down Sughrue in 21 holes to win the cup.
The Devereux Emmet Cup also needed extra holes to decide a winner, with No. 2 seed Jonathan Keane winning in 21 holes over Jesse Bull. In the Charles MacDonald Cup, No. 6 seed John Patterson defeated No. 1 seed Chris DeJohn 1-up to win the cup. Patterson defeated all three top seeds en route to securing his win.
In the Robert T. Jones Cup, the No. 2 seed, Alan Coshatt, defeated the No. 8 seed Stephen Walsh 3&2. In the William Taft Cup, No. 3 seed Andrew Lane defeated No. 5 seed Kevin Miller 2&1 to win.
The tournament honors Walter Travis, a three-time U.S. Amateur champion and the first American to win the British Amateur. Travis reworked the original Devereaux Emmet design.
The 18-hole qualifier establishes six different match-play flights, including the Eisenhower Cup and Travis Cup.
