After calling a penalty on himself that eventually leads to playoff, Mike Oimoen wins in first playoff hole
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 30, 2008)--Mike Oimoen of Clear Lake shot a final round of 1-under 69 and defeated Michael Wuertz of Davenport in a playoff to capture the 106th Iowa Amateur Championship held at Davenport Country Club. He finished the three-day tourney at 1-over-par 211.
Oimoen called a penalty on himself in round two when he had addressed his ball on the putting green of the 8th hole and the ball moved slightly. That cost him a one stroke penalty and eventually meant he went to a playoff with Wuertz, who fired a final round 71 to finish at 1-over 211. Oimoen won with a par on the first playoff hole (No. 18).
"I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I knew I had cheated," the 2007 Match Play champ told the Des Moines Register. "If I hadn't called that penalty on myself, I would have put an asterisk by my name, but it's a game of honor. It's the right thing to do."
Oimoen's round was buoyed by a chip-in for par at the 15th hole and a clutch birdie at the signature 16th hole.
