8880 pro and amateur golfers competed across 109 local qualifying sites; see who has made it one step closer to Brookline
U.S. Open qualifying is complete, as golfers from across the country and across the world tried to punch their ticket to the 122nd U.S. Open Championship in June at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
A total of 8,880 professional and amateur golfers competed across 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada. Successful qualifiers move on to one of 11 sectional qualifying sites--ten in the U.S. and one in Japan.
Highlights from local qualifying include:
May 23
Ryan Terry traveled all the way from his native Nashville, Tenn., to Palmer, Alaska, where he took the lone qualifying spot at Palmer Golf Club. The 30-year-old Terry shot a 68 to beat the field by two shots. The Alaska qualifier was the last of the 109 local qualifiers, from which a total of 530 players advanced out of 8,880.
May 17

High school senior Ethan Evans (Mercer Island, Wash.) shared medalist honors with pro Isaac Hall at Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Washington. The Duke commit, who is the reigning Washington Golf Boys Player of the Year, eagled his final hole of the day to catapult to the top of the leaderboard. The only other amateur to qualify from the site was Evans's U.S. Amateur Four-Ball partner Max Herendeen (Bellevue, Wash.), who is a high school junior committed to play in 2023 for Illinois.
Temple University freshman Ethan Whitney (Westminster, Mass.) was the lone amateur to advance to Final Qualifying at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He carded 2-over 73 and got through a 5-for-2 playoff alongside pro Eric Mabee.
May 16
Sharing medalist honors with three pros at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio was former Xavier golfer and mid-amateur Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio), making it two years in a row qualifying at locals. Two additional amateurs, Mason Witt and Casey Spiess were part of the nine advancing players as they tied for fifth at even-par 71.
Three amateurs are through at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. as Bulter redshirt freshman Daniel Tanaka (Wilmette, Ill.) led the trio at 3-under 68. Collegiate juniors Jackson Bussell (Lincolnshire, Ill.) of Bucknell and Timmy Crawford (Arlington Heights, Ill.) of Loyola Chicago posted 69 and 71, respectively. Crawford snuck through a 4-for-2 playoff.
Mid-amateur Mike Davidson (Mesa, Ariz.) birdied his last two holes of the day to card 67 and avoid a sizable playoff for the final spot at Mesa Country Club. The site's medalist, pro Chris Korte of Littleton, Colo., posted one of the lowest qualifying scores of the entire event -- a bogey-free 62. Another mid-am, David Mecca (Scranton, Pa.), was one of just three qualifiers at Glen Oak Country Club in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. His 1-under 70 featured a birdie on his closing hole, as well.
A pair of high-schoolers qualified at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. Sophomore Boston Bracken (St. George, Utah) and junior Cooper Jones (Highland, Utah) signed for 4-under 68 and were of a group of five players advancing to Final Qualifying.
At TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif., former Holy Names golfer (Livermore, Calif.) and CSU-Monterey Bay freshman A.J. Fitzgerald (Salinas, Calif.) shot 70 and 71, respectively, to earn two of five available qualifying spots. In Albany, N.Y., it was mid-amateur Bryan Adkison (Boston, Mass.) sneaking through with an even-par 71 at Shaker Ridge Country Club to claim the last available spot.
And out in Texas, a trio of amateurs fired 5-under 67 and secured the final three qualifying spots at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna. Benton, La. high school junior Noah McWilliams and mid-amateurs Harley Abrams (Tulsa, Okla.) and Kolton Crawford (Mansfield, Tex.) secured three of eight available spots, with recent Baylor graduate and current professional Cooper Dossey taking medalist honors.

Minnesota sophomore Ben Warian (Stillwater, Minn.) medaled by two at The Links at Norfolk in Ramsey, Minn., carding a 5-under round of 67 to best freshman teammate Bennett Swavely (Hudson, Wis.) by two. Additionally, South Dakota State junior Will Frazier (Apple Valley, Minn.) posted 70 to sneak through to Final Qualifying.
Loyola University Maryland sophomore Michael Crowley (Hunt Valley, Md.) tied for the top spot at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland. Firing 3-under 68, Crowley finished one ahead of recent University of Iowa graduate Benton Weinburg (Potomac, Md.) and Towson University junior Brad Riley (Olney, Md.), who both advanced, as well.
University of San Diego redshirt junior Charlie Reiter (Palm Desert, Calif.) was the lone amateur to qualify at Bermuda Dunes Country Club in Bermuda Dunes, California. With pro Jon Yoshihiro of Yorba Linda, Calif. blitzing the Classic course for nine birdies, Reiter had to settle for a tie for the runner-up spot with 4-under 68.

All five qualifiers at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. shared medalist honors at 3-under par 69, including two amateurs -- Arizona State freshman Preston Summerhays (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and mid-amateur Caston Roberts (Mesa, Ariz.). Summerhays bogeyed his first and final hole of the day with five birdies scattered between while Roberts, who played collegiately for Pepperdine, birdied two of his last three holes.
With eight spots available at Whitewater Creek Country Club in Fayetteville, Ga., three amateurs fired 3-under 68 to miss medaling by a shot. Future Coastal Carolina golfer Luke Koenig (Statham, Ga.), Georgia junior Connor Creasy (Abingdon, Va.), and Kennesaw State senior Brock Healy (Norcross, Ga.) tied for second behind pro Timothy O'Neal.
Playing The Legacy Club at Woodcrest in Cherry Hill, N.J., mid-amateur Michael Brown, Jr. (Maple Shade, N.J.) added to his USGA qualifying resume with a ticket to final stage. Brown was medalist at U.S. Amateur qualifying a year ago, and has qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur on four occasions, as well as one other U.S. Amateur.
Youngstown State senior Kevin Scherr (Nazarath, Pa.) shot even-par 70 at the Country Club of York in York, Pa. to serve as the site's only advancing amateur. And up in New Jersey at Knickerbocker Country Club, four amateurs tied for third to advance with rounds of 2-under par 70. Richmond freshman Cole Ekert (Chatham, N.J.), Iona College graduate student Justin Burkhamer (Charlotte, N.C.), Princeton sophomore Henry Dubiel (North Palm Beach, Fla.), and Rutgers junior Brendan Hansen (Spring Lake, N.J.) were the four players getting through to Final Qualifying.
North Carolina high school senior Ryan Jahr (Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.) was the only amateur to advance out of the River Landing Golf Club qualifier in Wallace, N.C. on Thursday. Jahr birdied his last hole to post 69 and tie for third with pro Holden Strickland.

The University of Oklahoma was well-represented at the Wichita Country Club qualifying site in Wichita, Kansas. Sooner senior Logan McAllister (Oklahoma City, Okla.) was medalist by two over three players, including teammate Drew Goodman (Norman, Okla.). McAllister, who also qualified at locals in 2018, was 5 under through 11 and came to the clubhouse with 4 under 67. Goodman birdied 16 and closed with two pars to avoid a playoff with teammate Patrick Welch. Also carding 2-under 69 was Wichita State redshirt freshman Joe Bultman (Shawnee, Kan.) and soon-to-be Texas Longhorn freshman Tommy Morrison (Frisco, Tex.).
Two amateurs shared medalist honors with one professional at Wild Rock Country Club in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. South Dakota State freshman Ty Kretz (Marinette, Wis.) and Wisconsin senior Griffin Barela (Lakewood, Colo.) shot 3-under par rounds of 69 and are through to Final Qualifying.

At Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., Jacob Cook (Frankfurt, Ky.) fired 66 and was co-medalist alongside pro Erik Edwards. Cook, a University of Kentucky graduate student, was a bogey on 16 away from owning top spot on the leaderboard. Still, he 5-under round of 66 easily advanced him to Final Qualifying along with one additional amateur, fellow graduate student Chris Francoeur (Amesbury, Mass.) of the University of Louisville, who posted 68.
With pro and former Oklahoma Sooner Beau Titsworth claiming medalist honors, four consecutive amateurs rounded out the five qualifying spots at Butler Country Club in Butler, Pennsylvania. Mid-amateur Darin Kowalski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Eastern Michigan senior Blaise Vanitvelt (Fenton, Mich.) were the only to break par, carding 1-under 69 and finishing two back of Titsworth. Then one back at even par were former pro hockey player Nick Sorkin (Moundsville, Md.) and recent Carnegie Mellon graduate Jason Li (Sewickley, Pa.), who each avoided what would have been a sizable playoff at 71. For Sorkin, it his second time getting through locals, doing so in 2019. He also medaled at U.S. Amateur qualifying in 2016. It's Li's second consecutive year qualifying at locals.
Two mid-amateurs, including one former NFL running back, qualified at a recent U.S. Senior Open host site. Connor Peck (Ankeny, Iowa), a former Kansas Jayhawk, was the only amateur under par at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska. Shooting even par and tying for third with pro Carson Schaake was retired running back Danny Woodhead (Elkhorn, Neb.), who is a member at Omaha. Woodhead, who played for four NFL teams over 10 seasons, qualified for the 2021 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball with partner Mike Wilhelm.

Seattle University senior Harrison Murphy (McKinney, Tex.) posted 6-under 30 on the back nine to catapult up the leaderboard at Missoula Country Club in Montana to share medalist honors with pro Matt Marshall. In Hot Springs, Ark., Henderson State graduate student Mitchell Ford (Little Rock, Ark.) birdied three of his last five holes at Hot Springs Country Club to share the medalist spot with pro Peyton Wilhoit.
Two amateurs are through to Final Qualifying from the Ironwood Country Club site in Palm Desert, Calif. as Vista Murrieta High School senior Jaden Huggins (Murrieta, Calif.) and Pepperdine senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn.) carded 2-under par rounds of 70, missing medalist honors by a shot. Huggins, who will attended Long Beach State in the fall, orchestrated a smooth bogey-free day while Hitchner made a clutch birdie on his 17th hole to avoid a playoff.
Westfield Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio hosted two qualifying events on Tuesday, one on their North course and another on their South course. At the North, three amateurs made it through, including former Duke golfer Ben Silverman (Toledo, Ohio) who was tops among the group 2-under 68. No amateurs successfully qualified on the South course. Meanwhile in Lincoln, R.I. at Kirkbrae Country Club, mid-amateur Tom McCormick (Warwick, R.I.) fired 3-under 69 to finish atop the leaderboard alongside pro Fletcher Babcock. University of Rhode Island junior Bryson Richards (Plainfield, Vt.) shot 1-under 71 and was the only other amateur to qualify.

Texas senior Parker Coody advanced in unbelievable fashion at the Forest Creek Golf Club qualifier in Round Rock, Texas. He aced the 8th and 17th hole and avoided a 7-man playoff for three spots by qualifying by a single stroke. Read more about Coody's feat here.
At Lake Forest Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., Illinois senior Tommy Kuhl (Morton, Ill.) medaled by a stroke on a day where no one in the field broke par. His 1-over 73 was a shot clear of runner-up Peter Weaver, a sophomore at Villanova, who was the only other amateur to get through at Lake Forest.
Oregon State senior and Eagle, Id. native Carson Barry won the BanBury Golf Club qualifier in his hometown. After birdieing three holes in a row on the front, Barry closed with a 2-over 37 on the back but finished atop the leaderboard at even-par 70.
At Blue Top Ridge Golf Club in Riverside, Iowa, three amateurs filled all three available qualifying spots, including two who shared medalist honors at 3-under 69. University of Missouri sophomore Jack Lundin (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and University of Iowa junior Mac McClear (Hinsdale, Ill.) finished tied atop the leaderboard, with Lundin overcoming a triple bogey at the par-4 15th to the next two holes. McClear's Hawkeye teammate, junior Garrett Tighe (Algonquin, Ill.) snuck in at 2-under 70 to skirt around a playoff.

Hunter Thomson (Calgary, Canada) went bogey-free at Phoenix Country Club in Arizona to medal by two. The University of Michigan freshman carded 65, birdieing his final hole of the day to get two clear of pros Cameron Sisk and Patrick Stolpe. Loyola Marymount junior Tony Hendricks (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the only other amateur to qualify, getting through in a two-hole playoff with four other players.
Jackson Solem (Longmont, Colo.) shared medalist honors with a professional Dan Griffin at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, Colorado, four days after his University of Denver teammate Esteban Missura was medalist across town in Westminster.
Tyler Gerbavsits (Huntington, N.Y.), winner of the 2021 Long Island Amateur, headed back to Long Island to claim another title, this time at U.S Open Local Qualifying. He medaled at Southampton Golf Club with a 1-under par round of 69 to finish as the only player in red figures. The St. John's University birdied his last two holes to edge mid-amateur Nicholas Maccario (Waltham, Mass.).
It was a sweep at the The G.C. at Oxford Greens qualifier in Oxford, Conn. as all four advancing players were amateurs. Mid-amateur Cody Paladino (West Hartford, Conn.), winner of last year's New England Amateur, posted 1-over 73 to medal in a field where no one broke par. It's his second straight year medalling in a USGA event as he finished atop the leaderboard at U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying last year. Finishing in a tie for the runner-up spot was Caleb Manuel, who was second to Paladino at the 2021 New England Amateur, as well. Also qualifying were Boston College junior Nick Cummings (Weston, Mass.) and mid-amateur Walker Lohrey.

At Morris Park Country Club in South Bend, Ind., Indiana University graduate Ethan Shepherd (Greenwood, Ind.) birdied two of his last three holes to end the day as the only player in red figures. His 2-under 68 kept him out of an 8-for-4 playoff that saw Notre Dame freshman Owen Mullen (Truro, Canada), Ball State redshirt freshman Griffin Hare (Tipton, Ind.), and Purdue sophomore Herman Sekne (Norway) squeak through to Final Qualifying.
Firing 3-under 69 and medalling at The Plantation in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. was Jacksonville University junior Alexandre Vandermoten (France). Up in Panama City, three amateurs tied for second place at 2-under 70 at Bay Point Resort. Vanderbilt senior Michael Shears (Franklin, Tenn.), Florida State freshman Brett Roberts (Coral Springs, Fla.), and University of Alabama-Birmingham redshirt junior Alfie Fox (England) advanced out of a 5-for-3 playoff to avoid what would have been at worst an alternate spot.
University of Houston sophomore Hanseung Chang (Cedar Park, Tex.) was the top amateur among eight qualifying players at Lakeside Country Club in Houston, Texas. His 3-under par 69, which featured four back-nine birdies, finished one back of sharing medalist honors. Two additional amateurs snuck through a 9-for-2 playoff at even-par 72 as high school senior Manuel Barbachano (Mexico) and UT-San Antonio junior Hunter Bott (Montgomery, Texas) are headed to Final Qualifying.

The only player to finish the day under par at The Ridge Golf Club in Auburn, Calif. was UC Davis senior Thomas Hutchison (San Jose, Calif.). The Pioneer H.S. graduate, who won the UC Davis-hosted El Macero Classic earlier this spring, bogeyed his second hole but wouldn't waver above par for the remainder of the day. Hutchison's teammate, sophomore Mark Stephens (Redding, Calif.) also advanced to Final Qualifying after getting through a 4-for-1 playoff at 1-over 72.
Two amateurs are through to Final Qualifying at the DeBordieu Club site in Georgetown, S.C. as Clemson freshman Andrew Swanson (Bluffton, S.C.) and High Point University graduate student Avery Price (Georgetown, S.C.) posted scores of 1-under 71. UNC-Charlotte junior Ben Woodruff finished second with a 4-under 68 at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. He advanced alongside Christian Castillo (Parker, Tex.) and AJ Beechler (Pinehurst, N.C.), who tied for third at 1-under 71.
Recent Pasadena City Championship winner Kyle An (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) tied for third at El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel, Calif. to finish as the site's top amateur. The soon-to-be UCLA Bruin freshman fired 2-under 70, one back of a pair of pro co-medalists. Also qualifying was mid-amateur Christopher Kim (Irvine, Calif.). And out in the desert at The Classic Club (Palm Desert, Calif.), Tiger Tahvildari (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was co-medalist alongside pro Jhared Hack. Fresno State senior Michael Cliff (Fresno, Calif.) fired 2-under 70 and qualified, as well.
A trio of amateurs qualified at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa., all coming in with 2-under par rounds of 69. Penn State freshman Morgan Lofland (Paoli, Pa), mid-amateur Cole Willcox (Wayne, Pa.), and Delaware sophomore Owen Manchester (Irvine, Calif.) each avoided a playoff with clutch birdies down the stretch.
Playing his home course, mid-amateur Nathan Bertsch (Bradenton, Fla.) fired 2-under 70 at Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. Former University of South Florida golfer Erik Souchak (Sarasota, Fla.) also qualified, joining Bertsch at 2-under where they avoided being alternates in a 5-for-3 playoff.
May 5
Ford Clegg
Mississippi State senior Ford Clegg (Mountain Brook, Ala.) led a group of four amateurs that made it out the Glencoe, Ala. qualifier. At RTJ Golf Trail at Silver Lakes, Clegg shot a 7-under 65, with Lipscomb's Michael Holan (Canada), LSU's Michael Sanders (Davidson, N.C.), and Jacksonville State Women's grad assistant coach Max Basler (Germany) all shooting rounds in the 60s to advance.
At Old Oakland Country Club in Indianapolis, Jiri Zuska (Czech Republic and the University of Louisville) was the co-medalist with a 67. A pair of Purdue Boilermakers, Joe Weiler (W. Lafayette, Ind.) and Andrew Farraye (St. Augustine, Fla.), also qualified with rounds of 69.
Christopher Newport junior Alex Price (Hillsboro, Va.) and Lourdes University's Isaac Simmons (Huddleston, Va.) shared medalist honors at The Federal Club in Glen Allen, Va., with Trey Marrion (Chesapeake, Va.) getting in through a 4-for-3 playoff for the final spot.

Former San Diego State golf Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) birdied five of the last seven holes to shoot a 5-under 67 and medal by two shots at The Grand Golf Club in San Diego. Arizona State commit Luke Potter (Carlsbad, Calif.) and San Diego State's Youssef Guezzale (La Jolla, Calif.) also qualified with rounds of 69 and 70, respectively.
At the always-difficult La Purisima GC in Lompoc, Calif., Baron Szeto (Moraga, Calif. and Cal Poly) was the only amateur to qualify, with a round of 70.
At Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., University of Arizona senior Christian Banke (Scottsdale, Ariz.) rode six birdies and an eagle to a 7-under 65 and a two-shot win.
University of Oklahoma sophomore Ben Lorenz (Phoenix, Ariz.) shot a 70 to advance from Midland (Texas) Country Club.
University of Central Florida senior Teddy Tetak (Slovakia) won a playoff for the final qualifying spot at Buckhorn Springs G&CC in Valrico, Fla. after a round of 68.

University of Denver senior Esteban Missura (Ecuador) shot a 5-under 67 to clear the field by one shot at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Westminster, Colorado. Ethan Adam (Chandler, Ariz., Colo. School of Mines) and Jack Hughes (Aspen, Colo., University of Colorado) both got through a 6-for-3 playoff to advance to Final Qualifying.
May 4

At Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, mid-amateur Justin Grant (Ocala, Fla.) had one of the more spectacular rounds in qualifying so far, shooting an 8-under 64 that included three eagles including a hole-in-one at the 202-yard 7th hole on the South Course. Benjamin Cai (Chinese Taipei) also qualified with a bogey-free 66.
May 3
Washington senior Noah Woolsey
Washington fifth-year senior and Pleasanton, Calif. native Noah Woolsey continued his hot run with a 4-under par 68 to medal in his hometown at Ruby Hill Golf Club. Woolsey is fresh off a Pac-12 individual title, which paced his Huskies to a three-shot win over Stanford. Foothill High School senior Chanhee Ryu (Pleasanton, Calif.), UCLA graduate student Eddy Lai (San Jose, Calif.), and De La Salle High School sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya (Fairfield, Calif.) all carded 1-under 71 to round out the four amateur qualifiers.
Gavin Hagstrom (Fort Collins, Colo.), a redshirt freshman at Colorado State, birdied four of his first six holes at Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins to share medalist honors with two pros. With only four spots available, it was mid-amateur and former University of Colorado-Colorado Springs golfer Ryan Burke (Firestone, Colo.) grabbing the qualifying position in a playoff, making it the second year in a row he's gotten through U.S. Open locals.
Playing his rival school's home course, North Carolina senior Ryan Gerard (Jupiter, Fla.) shared medalist honors with 31-year old pro Zach Edmondson at Duke Univ. Golf Course in Durham, N.C. Gerard, who began his day on the back nine, birdied 7, 8, and 9 to move from being in a playoff for the second alternate spot to the top of the leaderboard.
Mid-amateur Mark Manwaring (Long Beach, Calif.) and Pepperdine senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash.) were two of five qualifiers to come out of the Andalusia Country Club site in La Quinta, California. Manwaring, who also got through locals back in 2019, posted a bogey-free 68 while Highsmith, who medaled at both local and final qualifying in 2021, bogeyed his opening hole before going 4-under the remainder of the day to sign for 69.
At Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, N.J., Oklahoma senior Chris Gotterup (Little Silver, N.J.), who registered for U.S. Open qualifying as a professional, blitzed the course with a bogey-free 64 to medal by four. Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.), a sophomore at Seton Hall, was the lone amateur to finish under par at -2, securing him a spot at Final Qualifying. Sun's teammate, senior Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.), was one of two amateurs to sneak through a 9-for-4 playoff at 1-under par 71.
Returning to his former home course was mid-amateur and former UNM Lobo James Gehrke (Albuquerque, N.M.) who eagled his final hole to post 3-under 69 and snag one of just two spots at the Univ. of New Mexico G.C. site in Albuquerque. Recent Oakland University graduate Thomas Giroux (Georgetown, Canada) was the lone amateur player to advance to Final Qualifying at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan.
May 2

20-year old Cooper Griffin (Weston, Mass.) birdied three of his last five holes at Foxborough Country Club in Foxborough, Mass. to earn medalist honors by a stroke over mid-amateur Sean Fitzpatrick (Wapole, Mass.). Three additional amateurs (Kevin Gately, Jake Shuman, and Ben Spitz) competed in a five-for-four playoff and all three secured qualifying spots after rounds of even-par 72 and pars on the second playoff hole.
The Peach Tree qualifier in Marysville, Calif. saw a trio of amateurs claim Final Qualifying spots, including medalist Ethan Davidson (Simi Valley, Calif.). The junior at Sacramento State used a pair of eagles on his opening nine to kick-start his 6-under par 66. Mid-amateur and former Bellevue University golfer Taylor Sundbom (Duluth, Minn.) medaled by a stroke at the Windsong Farm qualifier in Maple Plain, Minnesota. Amateurs Ben Sigel (Deephaven, Minn.) and Josh Persons (Fargo, N.D.) also advanced, each carding 1-under 71 at the Tom Lehman-designed private club 25 miles outside Minneapolis.
At Lexington Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla., soon-to-be Florida State freshman and recent Azalea Invitational winner Luke Clanton (Miami Lakes, Fla.) overcame a double-bogey on his fourth hole with an eagle on his ninth to restart his round and eventually snag the last of four available qualifying spots.

Ohio State junior Jackson Chandler (Dublin, Ohio) carded 66 to medal at Scioto Reserve Country Club in Powell, Ohio. It's his second career USGA medal, having topped the field at U.S. Amateur qualifying a year ago at his school home course in Columbus. J.F. Aber (Sewickley, Pa.) got his round started with a bang on the back side, eagling the par-5 10th en route to a 5-under 67. Also qualifying were Wright State junior Mikkel Mathiesen (Denmark), Dublin, Ohio high schooler Zach Burton, and future Buckeye Joe Wilson (West Chester, Ohio), who birdied the first playoff hole to grab the last of seven spots.
Five amateurs qualified at Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, Conn. on Monday. Princeton sophomore Jackson Fretty was one of three among the group to card 1-over 73 at the historic southwest Connecticut club. Ben James (Milford, Conn.), fresh off a runner-up finish at the Terra Cotta Invitational, and former Post University golfer Anthony Guerrera (Watertown, Conn.) also came in with 73.
Florida Gulf Coast University junior Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn.) finished birdie-birdie at Sara Bay Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. to serve as the site's only amateur to advance. Capan fired back-to-back 64s in March to win the Auburn Tiger Intercollegiate by eight. Across the state on the Atlantic coast, a pair of Florida mid-amateur players are through to Final Qualifying as Will Block (Plantation, Fla.) and Joey Latowski (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) secured two of five spots available at Pine Tree Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida.
Nicholas Arcement (Thibodaux, La.), who was medalist for his LSU Tigers this spring at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, advanced in a four-for-one playoff at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, Louisiana. And St. Mary's College freshman Mitchell Hoey (Alamo, Calif.) was the lone amateur advancing at Fountaingrove G. & A.C. in Santa Rosa, California.
Michigan State junior Bradley Smithson overcame a double-bogey on his second hole to eventually rattle off five birdies, including four in a row on the back nine, to shoot 69 and secure a qualifying spot at Muskegon Country Club alongside in-state rival Will Anderson, a sophomore at Michigan.
Playing Brentwood Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif., mid-amateurs Torey Edwards (Long Beach, Calif.) and Colby Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted even-par 71 to lock in two of five available spots. Out in the desert, Saddleback College freshman Art Hess (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and Reilly Breaux shot 3 under and 2 under, respectively, to earn qualifying spots at Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert.

Moll, a junior at Vanderbilt University, was one of two amateurs to advance as fellow SEC golfer and University of Alabama junior Thomas Ponder (Dothan, Ala.) secured the last of five spots in a playoff.
Trent Phillips (Inman, S.C.) went 2 under his last four to post 68 and advance to Final Qualifying at the Columbia Country Club site in Blythewood, S.C. The University of Georgia senior was one of just two amateurs to break par on Thursday.

A slew of amateurs are through to Final Qualifying from the Tangle Ridge Golf Club qualifier in Dallas, Texas. TCU commit and Jesuit Dallas junior Andrew Petruzzelli (Dallas, Tex.), as well as SMU commit Christian Clark (Dallas, Tex.) birdied their last hole to avoid a playoff and share medalist honors with professional Brandon Smith.

University of Tennessee commit Caleb Surratt (Indian Trail, N.C.) was the medalist at Fox Den CC in Knoxville, Tenn., shooting a 67 to top the field by one shot. His fellow Volunteer Spencer Cross (Sevierville, Tenn.) also advanced with a 68.
Former Washington State golfer Johnny Carey (Seattle, Wash.) was the lone amateur to advance from the Bremerton, Wash. qualifier, shooting a 71 at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
What's Next
Players who advance out of local qualifying will join a group of locally exempt players in Final Qualifying. The 122nd U.S. Open will be played at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. June 16-19, 2022.
A total of 8,880 professional and amateur golfers competed across 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada. Successful qualifiers move on to one of 11 sectional qualifying sites--ten in the U.S. and one in Japan.

Sharing medalist honors with three pros at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio was former Xavier golfer and mid-amateur Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio), making it two years in a row qualifying at locals. Two additional amateurs, Mason Witt and Casey Spiess were part of the nine advancing players as they tied for fifth at even-par 71.
Three amateurs are through at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. as Bulter redshirt freshman Daniel Tanaka (Wilmette, Ill.) led the trio at 3-under 68. Collegiate juniors Jackson Bussell (Lincolnshire, Ill.) of Bucknell and Timmy Crawford (Arlington Heights, Ill.) of Loyola Chicago posted 69 and 71, respectively. Crawford snuck through a 4-for-2 playoff.
Mid-amateur Mike Davidson (Mesa, Ariz.) birdied his last two holes of the day to card 67 and avoid a sizable playoff for the final spot at Mesa Country Club. The site's medalist, pro Chris Korte of Littleton, Colo., posted one of the lowest qualifying scores of the entire event -- a bogey-free 62. Another mid-am, David Mecca (Scranton, Pa.), was one of just three qualifiers at Glen Oak Country Club in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. His 1-under 70 featured a birdie on his closing hole, as well.
A pair of high-schoolers qualified at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. Sophomore Boston Bracken (St. George, Utah) and junior Cooper Jones (Highland, Utah) signed for 4-under 68 and were of a group of five players advancing to Final Qualifying.
At TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif., former Holy Names golfer (Livermore, Calif.) and CSU-Monterey Bay freshman A.J. Fitzgerald (Salinas, Calif.) shot 70 and 71, respectively, to earn two of five available qualifying spots. In Albany, N.Y., it was mid-amateur Bryan Adkison (Boston, Mass.) sneaking through with an even-par 71 at Shaker Ridge Country Club to claim the last available spot.
And out in Texas, a trio of amateurs fired 5-under 67 and secured the final three qualifying spots at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna. Benton, La. high school junior Noah McWilliams and mid-amateurs Harley Abrams (Tulsa, Okla.) and Kolton Crawford (Mansfield, Tex.) secured three of eight available spots, with recent Baylor graduate and current professional Cooper Dossey taking medalist honors.

Firing 3-under 68, Crowley finished one ahead of recent University of Iowa graduate Benton Weinburg (Potomac, Md.) and Towson University junior Brad Riley (Olney, Md.), who both advanced, as well.
University of San Diego redshirt junior Charlie Reiter (Palm Desert, Calif.) was the lone amateur to qualify at Bermuda Dunes Country Club in Bermuda Dunes, California. With pro Jon Yoshihiro of Yorba Linda, Calif. blitzing the Classic course for nine birdies, Reiter had to settle for a tie for the runner-up spot with 4-under 68.

Playing The Legacy Club at Woodcrest in Cherry Hill, N.J., mid-amateur Michael Brown, Jr. (Maple Shade, N.J.) added to his USGA qualifying resume with a ticket to final stage. Brown was medalist at U.S. Amateur qualifying a year ago, and has qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur on four occasions, as well as one other U.S. Amateur.
Youngstown State senior Kevin Scherr (Nazarath, Pa.) shot even-par 70 at the Country Club of York in York, Pa. to serve as the site's only advancing amateur. And up in New Jersey at Knickerbocker Country Club, four amateurs tied for third to advance with rounds of 2-under par 70. Richmond freshman Cole Ekert (Chatham, N.J.), Iona College graduate student Justin Burkhamer (Charlotte, N.C.), Princeton sophomore Henry Dubiel (North Palm Beach, Fla.), and Rutgers junior Brendan Hansen (Spring Lake, N.J.) were the four players getting through to Final Qualifying.
North Carolina high school senior Ryan Jahr (Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.) was the only amateur to advance out of the River Landing Golf Club qualifier in Wallace, N.C. on Thursday. Jahr birdied his last hole to post 69 and tie for third with pro Holden Strickland.

With pro and former Oklahoma Sooner Beau Titsworth claiming medalist honors, four consecutive amateurs rounded out the five qualifying spots at Butler Country Club in Butler, Pennsylvania. Mid-amateur Darin Kowalski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Eastern Michigan senior Blaise Vanitvelt (Fenton, Mich.) were the only to break par, carding 1-under 69 and finishing two back of Titsworth. Then one back at even par were former pro hockey player Nick Sorkin (Moundsville, Md.) and recent Carnegie Mellon graduate Jason Li (Sewickley, Pa.), who each avoided what would have been a sizable playoff at 71. For Sorkin, it his second time getting through locals, doing so in 2019. He also medaled at U.S. Amateur qualifying in 2016. It's Li's second consecutive year qualifying at locals.
Two mid-amateurs, including one former NFL running back, qualified at a recent U.S. Senior Open host site. Connor Peck (Ankeny, Iowa), a former Kansas Jayhawk, was the only amateur under par at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska. Shooting even par and tying for third with pro Carson Schaake was retired running back Danny Woodhead (Elkhorn, Neb.), who is a member at Omaha. Woodhead, who played for four NFL teams over 10 seasons, qualified for the 2021 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball with partner Mike Wilhelm.

Two amateurs are through to Final Qualifying from the Ironwood Country Club site in Palm Desert, Calif. as Vista Murrieta High School senior Jaden Huggins (Murrieta, Calif.) and Pepperdine senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn.) carded 2-under par rounds of 70, missing medalist honors by a shot. Huggins, who will attended Long Beach State in the fall, orchestrated a smooth bogey-free day while Hitchner made a clutch birdie on his 17th hole to avoid a playoff.
Westfield Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio hosted two qualifying events on Tuesday, one on their North course and another on their South course. At the North, three amateurs made it through, including former Duke golfer Ben Silverman (Toledo, Ohio) who was tops among the group 2-under 68. No amateurs successfully qualified on the South course. Meanwhile in Lincoln, R.I. at Kirkbrae Country Club, mid-amateur Tom McCormick (Warwick, R.I.) fired 3-under 69 to finish atop the leaderboard alongside pro Fletcher Babcock. University of Rhode Island junior Bryson Richards (Plainfield, Vt.) shot 1-under 71 and was the only other amateur to qualify.

At Lake Forest Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., Illinois senior Tommy Kuhl (Morton, Ill.) medaled by a stroke on a day where no one in the field broke par. His 1-over 73 was a shot clear of runner-up Peter Weaver, a sophomore at Villanova, who was the only other amateur to get through at Lake Forest.
Oregon State senior and Eagle, Id. native Carson Barry won the BanBury Golf Club qualifier in his hometown. After birdieing three holes in a row on the front, Barry closed with a 2-over 37 on the back but finished atop the leaderboard at even-par 70.
At Blue Top Ridge Golf Club in Riverside, Iowa, three amateurs filled all three available qualifying spots, including two who shared medalist honors at 3-under 69. University of Missouri sophomore Jack Lundin (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and University of Iowa junior Mac McClear (Hinsdale, Ill.) finished tied atop the leaderboard, with Lundin overcoming a triple bogey at the par-4 15th to the next two holes. McClear's Hawkeye teammate, junior Garrett Tighe (Algonquin, Ill.) snuck in at 2-under 70 to skirt around a playoff.

Jackson Solem (Longmont, Colo.) shared medalist honors with a professional Dan Griffin at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, Colorado, four days after his University of Denver teammate Esteban Missura was medalist across town in Westminster.
Tyler Gerbavsits (Huntington, N.Y.), winner of the 2021 Long Island Amateur, headed back to Long Island to claim another title, this time at U.S Open Local Qualifying. He medaled at Southampton Golf Club with a 1-under par round of 69 to finish as the only player in red figures. The St. John's University birdied his last two holes to edge mid-amateur Nicholas Maccario (Waltham, Mass.).
It was a sweep at the The G.C. at Oxford Greens qualifier in Oxford, Conn. as all four advancing players were amateurs. Mid-amateur Cody Paladino (West Hartford, Conn.), winner of last year's New England Amateur, posted 1-over 73 to medal in a field where no one broke par. It's his second straight year medalling in a USGA event as he finished atop the leaderboard at U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying last year. Finishing in a tie for the runner-up spot was Caleb Manuel, who was second to Paladino at the 2021 New England Amateur, as well. Also qualifying were Boston College junior Nick Cummings (Weston, Mass.) and mid-amateur Walker Lohrey.

Up in Panama City, three amateurs tied for second place at 2-under 70 at Bay Point Resort. Vanderbilt senior Michael Shears (Franklin, Tenn.), Florida State freshman Brett Roberts (Coral Springs, Fla.), and University of Alabama-Birmingham redshirt junior Alfie Fox (England) advanced out of a 5-for-3 playoff to avoid what would have been at worst an alternate spot.
University of Houston sophomore Hanseung Chang (Cedar Park, Tex.) was the top amateur among eight qualifying players at Lakeside Country Club in Houston, Texas. His 3-under par 69, which featured four back-nine birdies, finished one back of sharing medalist honors. Two additional amateurs snuck through a 9-for-2 playoff at even-par 72 as high school senior Manuel Barbachano (Mexico) and UT-San Antonio junior Hunter Bott (Montgomery, Texas) are headed to Final Qualifying.

UNC-Charlotte junior Ben Woodruff finished second with a 4-under 68 at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. He advanced alongside Christian Castillo (Parker, Tex.) and AJ Beechler (Pinehurst, N.C.), who tied for third at 1-under 71.
Recent Pasadena City Championship winner Kyle An (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) tied for third at El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel, Calif. to finish as the site's top amateur. The soon-to-be UCLA Bruin freshman fired 2-under 70, one back of a pair of pro co-medalists. Also qualifying was mid-amateur Christopher Kim (Irvine, Calif.). And out in the desert at The Classic Club (Palm Desert, Calif.), Tiger Tahvildari (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was co-medalist alongside pro Jhared Hack. Fresno State senior Michael Cliff (Fresno, Calif.) fired 2-under 70 and qualified, as well.
A trio of amateurs qualified at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa., all coming in with 2-under par rounds of 69. Penn State freshman Morgan Lofland (Paoli, Pa), mid-amateur Cole Willcox (Wayne, Pa.), and Delaware sophomore Owen Manchester (Irvine, Calif.) each avoided a playoff with clutch birdies down the stretch.
Playing his home course, mid-amateur Nathan Bertsch (Bradenton, Fla.) fired 2-under 70 at Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. With only four spots available, it was mid-amateur and former University of Colorado-Colorado Springs golfer Ryan Burke (Firestone, Colo.) grabbing the qualifying position in a playoff, making it the second year in a row he's gotten through U.S. Open locals.
Playing his rival school's home course, North Carolina senior Ryan Gerard (Jupiter, Fla.) shared medalist honors with 31-year old pro Zach Edmondson at Duke Univ. Golf Course in Durham, N.C. Gerard, who began his day on the back nine, birdied 7, 8, and 9 to move from being in a playoff for the second alternate spot to the top of the leaderboard.
Mid-amateur Mark Manwaring (Long Beach, Calif.) and Pepperdine senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash.) were two of five qualifiers to come out of the Andalusia Country Club site in La Quinta, California. Manwaring, who also got through locals back in 2019, posted a bogey-free 68 while Highsmith, who medaled at both local and final qualifying in 2021, bogeyed his opening hole before going 4-under the remainder of the day to sign for 69.

Florida Gulf Coast University junior Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn.) finished birdie-birdie at Sara Bay Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. to serve as the site's only amateur to advance. Capan fired back-to-back 64s in March to win the Auburn Tiger Intercollegiate by eight. Across the state on the Atlantic coast, a pair of Florida mid-amateur players are through to Final Qualifying as Will Block (Plantation, Fla.) and Joey Latowski (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) secured two of five spots available at Pine Tree Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida.
Nicholas Arcement (Thibodaux, La.), who was medalist for his LSU Tigers this spring at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, advanced in a four-for-one playoff at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, Louisiana. And St. Mary's College freshman Mitchell Hoey (Alamo, Calif.) was the lone amateur advancing at Fountaingrove G. & A.C. in Santa Rosa, California.
Michigan State junior Bradley Smithson overcame a double-bogey on his second hole to eventually rattle off five birdies, including four in a row on the back nine, to shoot 69 and secure a qualifying spot at Muskegon Country Club alongside in-state rival Will Anderson, a sophomore at Michigan.
Playing Brentwood Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif., mid-amateurs Torey Edwards (Long Beach, Calif.) and Colby Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted even-par 71 to lock in two of five available spots. Out in the desert, Saddleback College freshman Art Hess (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and Reilly Breaux shot 3 under and 2 under, respectively, to earn qualifying spots at Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert.

Trent Phillips (Inman, S.C.) went 2 under his last four to post 68 and advance to Final Qualifying at the Columbia Country Club site in Blythewood, S.C. The University of Georgia senior was one of just two amateurs to break par on Thursday.
April 27
A slew of amateurs are through to Final Qualifying from the Tangle Ridge Golf Club qualifier in Dallas, Texas. TCU commit and Jesuit Dallas junior Andrew Petruzzelli (Dallas, Tex.), as well as SMU commit Christian Clark (Dallas, Tex.) birdied their last hole to avoid a playoff and share medalist honors with professional Brandon Smith.

Finally, two Keller High School teammates advanced with 67s. Daniel Choi (Keller, Tex.) and Kaelen Dulany (Keller, Tex.) came in with 32 on the back nine to join the pair of Mustangs and pro Miguel Delgado in the playoff.

New Mexico State sophomore Scott Rescigno (Reno, Nev.) was one of three players who shot the low round of 68 at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M., but with only two spots available, he was able to advance through a 3-for-2 playoff.
Jackson Parrish (Henderson, Nev.) had two eagles -- one on a par four -- to shoot 66 and take one of two qualifying spots at CasaBlanca Golf Club in Mesquite, Nev.

Stanford University commit Dean Greyserman (Boca Raton, Fla.) shot a 71 at Coral Ridge CC in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., then advanced through a 6-for-2 playoff to advance.
37-year-old Keith Guest (Athens, Ga.) also advanced through a playoff, shooting 69 at Marietta CC in Kennesaw, Ga. and taking the final spot in a 4-for-2 playoff.

Former Washington State golfer Johnny Carey (Seattle, Wash.) was the lone amateur to advance from the Bremerton, Wash. qualifier, shooting a 71 at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
What's Next
Players who advance out of local qualifying will join a group of locally exempt players in Final Qualifying. The 122nd U.S. Open will be played at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. June 16-19, 2022.

About the U.S. Open Local Qualifying
18-hole stroke play qualifier open to male amateurs with a handicap of 0.4 and below. Players who advance will get to choose their top three sectional qualifying sites. The number of qualifying spots will depend on the size of the field.
