Campbell University’s Pontus Nyholm trailed by one heading into the final round of the Stitch Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs in Cary, North Carolina this past weekend. The senior, hailing from Sweden, rewrote the Campbell record books on his way to his third individual win of the spring.
Nyholm, ranked 71st in the latest WAGR rankings, fired a final round 62 to claim the individual title in the tournament, breaking the school record for lowest score to par (68-69-62—199/-17) in the process. With the victory, Nyholm earns a sponsor’s exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour’s REX Hospital Open, held June 3-6 in Raleigh.
"Any time you have a 62, it's a good day," Nyholm was quoted in Campbell’s write-up of the event. "Doing it in front of all the guys and the coaches makes it extra special. My plan is to come back the States next fall for Korn Ferry Q-School, so to get a taste this summer of what the Korn Ferry tour is like is amazing."
Nyholm led the field in par-4 scoring (-12), was even on the par-4 holes and 5-under on the par fives. He made 19 birdies, second-most in the 68-golfer field. His team finished fifth in the event, 26 strokes behind ninth-ranked NC State, who claimed the team title with a score of 51-under par.
Four of NC State’s golfers finished in the top ten of the individual standings, and the 51-under was also a program record. It was the fourth consecutive team win for the Wolfpack.
The Wolfpack were led by graduate student Christian Saltzer, who shot 65-72-65—202 to finish three behind Nyholm in solo second. NC State’s Maximillian Steinlechner (T3-203), Easton Paxton (T5-204), and Benjamin Shipp (T5-204) were right behind Saltzer on the leaderboard.
Ninth-ranked NC State finished 12 shots clear of 26th Ranked Notre Dame in second, and 13 shots clear of 55th ranked East Tennessee State, who finished in third.
