2026 Crump Cup Coverage Hub: Bale's 71 Leads After Round 1 at Pine Valley

Round 1: Bale's 71 leads on a day nobody broke par

Pine Valley won Thursday. Nobody in the 78-man Open Division field broke par 70 in the opening round of qualifying at the 101st George A. Crump Memorial Tournament — and the man who came closest did it by surviving the front nine, then attacking the one stretch where Pine Valley gives you a breath.

Jonathan Bale of Jupiter, FL was even through three holes before the course pushed back: bogeys at the 4th, the short 5th and the 9th sent him out in 38. Then came the turn. Bale opened the back nine 2-3 — a deuce at the famous short par-3 10th and a birdie at 11 — gave one back at 13, and picked up his third birdie of the side at the par-5 15th. His 2-under 33 coming home was the round of the day within the round of the day, and his 1-over 71 leads by two.

The seven-man pack at 73 got there by every route imaginable. Chadd Slutzky was 5-over through nine after a 6 at the par-5 7th and its Hell's Half Acre crossing, then matched Bale's inward 33 with a deuce at 14 and back-to-back birdies at 16 and 17. Gregor Orlando made his own deuce at the 10th on the way home in 34, a nine Drew Kittleson matched. Stewart Hagestad played the tidiest card of the group — he birdied both par 5s, the 7th and the 15th, in an era when most of the field was just trying to escape them. Chad Wilfong had the low outward nine among the co-chasers at 36 and was poised to post something lower until a double bogey at the 17th. And Andrew Bailey took the scenic route: a double at the 2nd, a deuce at the 14th, another double at the 16th, and a bounce-back birdie at 17.

Then there were the rounds that show why nobody breaks par here. Andrew Price played the best nine holes of the entire day — out in 2-under 33 and briefly the man to catch — before Pine Valley took it all back: home in 43, with a 7 at the par-3 14th and an 8 at the 16th, to sign for 76. Brad Nurski made four birdies, more than the leader, and still shot 76 after running up a 9 at the par-5 15th. Matthew Van Zandt took a 10 at the same hole — and then birdied the 18th, because that is how this tournament goes.

Defending champion Bobby Wyatt staggered out in 42, a triple bogey at the 6th doing the damage, then steadied with an even-par 35 coming home for 77. File that away: Wyatt qualified for last year's Championship Flight on the number at 148 and won the whole thing. At 77, alongside 2025 co-medalist Miguel Ordonez and eight others, he is squarely on last year's flight pace with a round to play. Bobby Massa, last year's runner-up, opened with 76.

Seniors: a past champions' reunion at the top

The Senior Division leaderboard reads like a roll call. Three past Senior Champions — Michael McCoy, Jamie Slonis and Tommy Brennan — share the lead at 74, and McCoy's round had the day's best stretch of golf in either division: a deuce at the 10th followed by birdies at 11 and 12, three in a row through the heart of the back nine, before a double at 16 trimmed the margin. Slonis made a deuce at the 14th; Brennan birdied the par-5 7th but gave his cushion back with a 7 at the 15th. Defending Senior Champion Bob Royak sits two back at 76 after a front nine that featured a deuce at the par-3 3rd — he went out in 36 and came home in 40. Robert C. Funk withdrew with an injury.

The stakes Friday

Round 2 sets everything: the Open Division's 78 players are chasing 48 match play spots and, above all, the low-16 Championship Flight, while 21 seniors compete for 16 places. Last year the flight line was roughly 148 and simply making the weekend took 153 — so nearly the entire field will tee off Friday with a live chance, and the 73s know a repeat effort likely means a medal. A reminder for Sunday planners: Pine Valley will not be open to the public for the final match.

The waiting is over. The 2026 George A. Crump Memorial Tournament began Thursday morning at Pine Valley Golf Club, where amateur golf's most coveted invitation-only field opened two days of stroke play qualifying on the world's consensus No. 1 golf course.

The week at a glance

Thursday, Sept. 17: Qualifying Round 1 (stroke play). Friday, Sept. 18: Qualifying Round 2 — field flighted by 36-hole total, low 16 into the Championship Flight. Saturday, Sept. 19: Match play, opening rounds. Sunday, Sept. 20: Semifinals and finals. A separate senior championship runs concurrently on the same schedule.

What the numbers say: the 2025 baseline

Pine Valley plays to a par of 70 for the Crump Cup, and history says nobody runs away from it. Last year, 142 (+2) shared the qualifying medal three ways — Miguel Ordonez, Will Davenport and William F. Peel IV — and Peel's opening 69 was the only sub-par round posted by anyone in the field over two days.

The number that matters most is the Championship Flight line. In 2025 it took roughly 148 (+8) to crack the low 16 — defending champion Bobby Wyatt got in at exactly 148 and then won the whole thing, a reminder that qualifying position means little once match play starts. Simply making the weekend required 153; at 154, Bill Williamson claimed the last spot in the flights while Chris Stutts went home on the same number. On the senior side, Gene Elliott and Michael McCoy shared the 2025 medal at 147, and it took 158 to survive to match play.

Translation for Thursday: anything around 71-72 is a legitimately strong round here, and a pair of 74s likely has a player right on the Championship Flight bubble.

Players to watch

Bobby Wyatt defends the title he won over Bobby Massa in last year's final — the tournament's 100th playing — and his 2025 path (squeaking into the flight at 148, then running the bracket) is the blueprint for why nobody should sweat a slow Thursday. Massa is back with unfinished business, and opened with 76. Keep an eye on last year's co-medalists — Ordonez, Davenport and Peel — along with mid-am mainstay Stewart Hagestad, who qualified comfortably a year ago. In the senior division, Bob Royak — the 2019 U.S. Senior Amateur champion — defends against a flight that figures to again include Elliott and McCoy, the Norwalk, Iowa pair who shared last year's senior medal.

The format

Two rounds of stroke play qualifying Thursday and Friday, with the field then flighted by 36-hole score — the low 16 into the Championship Flight — before match play takes over the weekend. Jay Sigel still owns the record book with nine titles between 1975 and 1993.

Why it stands alone

There is no entry form and no points list — only the invitation. The world's consensus No. 1 golf course, a field assembled entirely by invitation and maintained by performance and conduct, competitors sleeping in the dorms on property, and a week that operates entirely on Pine Valley's terms. Public viewing of the Sunday finals remains suspended — which only deepens the event's status as amateur golf's most compelling thing that almost nobody sees.

The Crump Cup floats its dates each year to avoid the U.S. Mid-Amateur, which begins next week at Sand Valley — meaning the best mid-amateurs in the country will try to play both.
