The French Amateur Stroke Play Championship was shortened to 54-holes but it was not short on heroics as Iván Cantero beat Marco Penge in playoff
PICARDIE, FRANCE (May 22, 2016) - Iván Cantero and Marco Penge both finished 5-under and needed a playoff to determine the French Amateur Stroke Play Champion. The final day of play at Chantilly Golf Club was scheduled for 36-holes but after the completion of the third round, rain soaked the course forcing tournament officials to call play following 54-holes and the completion of the playoff.
Cantero and Penge headed to the par-3 16th hole for the playoff and halved it the first time around. After heading back to the tee to play the hole again Cantero was able to emerge victorious. Frenchman Victor Veyret missed out on the playoff by a stroke after he three-putted the final hole. Veyret ended up in third at 4-under.
Iván Cantero, of Spain, began the third round tied for third and two behind before firing a closing round 2-under 69. Cantero, who won the Copa Andalucia earlier in the year, bogeyed the first hole before rebounding with birdies on holes three and five. After turning in 1-under 35, Cantero birdied two holes and bogeyed one on the back nine to earn his share of the title.
Second round co-leader and 2015 Scottish Open Amateur winner, Marco Penge had an uneven third round carding four bogeys, two bogeys and a double-bogey. Penge, from England, has had a very successful month of May, finishing in a fourth place tie at the Irish Amateur earlier in the month.
Max Albertus led after each of the first two rounds but struggled to a 6-over 77 in the final round to finish tied for seventh. Albertus had bogeyed just two holes during the first two rounds but bogeyed four and double-bogeyed two others in the third round.
Grégoire Schoeb (-3) was fourth while three others shared fifth at 1-under.
