OCONOMOWOC, WI (June 16, 2016) -- Zach Gaugert was 1 down in the Wisconsin Match Play championship match when he stepped onto the 17th tee box but he didn't panic. Gaugert, the 29-seed birdied the par-3 penultimate hole at Oconomowoc Golf Club to square the match against No. 48 Wil Wittmann and then he birdied the final hole to win the match.
It was a tightly contested throughout with neither player leading by more than a hole. Wittmann, who recently finished his University of Detroit career, took his final lead of the match on the 16th hole, only to lose the final two holes.
Despite the closeness of the match Gaugert, a recent Marquette graduate only led after two holes, the 9th and 18th holes.
Gaugert reached the finals with a 6&5 win over No. 7 Tyler Leach while Wittmann defeated No. 29 Ryan Zikeli 3&2.
