Yuna Nishimura Wins First LPGA Title With the Club She Helped Create

Most players spend a career adapting to the clubs they are handed. Yuna Nishimura got to help design one of hers, and on Sunday it helped carry her to her first LPGA Tour victory.

The 26-year-old from Japan went wire-to-wire at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark., opening with back-to-back 63s and closing with a 66 to finish at 21-under 192. She won by five over Aki Iwai, Chanettee Wannasaen and In Gee Chun. In the bag was Callaway's new Quantum Mini Spinner 7-wood, a club that exists in part because of problems she brought to Callaway's engineers.

How the win unfolded

Nishimura carried a five-shot lead into Sunday, but it didn't stay comfortable for long. She played the front nine at even par while fellow Japanese player Aki Iwai caught fire, making six birdies in a seven-hole stretch on her way to a bogey-free 62.

Rather than protect the lead, Nishimura pressed. The decisive moment came at the par-5 14th, where she reached the green in two with a fairway wood over the water and made eagle to go three clear. Two more birdies followed, and she came home in 5-under 30 to restore the five-shot margin.

The win is a breakthrough in more ways than one. Nishimura is a six-time winner on the JLPGA Tour, but she had missed the cut in five of her previous six LPGA starts. She became the third first-time winner on the LPGA this season and the 24th Japanese player to win on the tour.

The problem she brought to Callaway

On the LPGA Tour, Nishimura faced a problem that plenty of amateurs will recognize: her high-lofted fairway woods (a 7-, 9- and 11-wood) weren't producing enough spin or a steep enough landing angle to hold greens, especially on approaches into par 4s and on longer par 3s.

She asked Callaway for a club that could launch high and stop quickly. According to Callaway, that request helped inspire the Quantum Mini Spinner. Since putting the 7-wood in play, Nishimura has picked up 600 to 700 rpm of spin and a higher peak height.

Callaway calls the Mini Spinner "The Scoring Wood," and the pitch is a simple one. Most fairway woods are engineered to reduce spin and chase distance. The Mini Spinner goes the other way, trading some distance for height, spin and a steeper descent so long approaches land softly.

What makes the Mini Spinner different

• High-spin construction. A higher center of gravity is paired with an Ai-optimized face designed to add spin and tighten dispersion.

• Shorter length. It plays 0.75 inches shorter than a traditional fairway wood, which is meant to promote more consistent contact and control.

• Taller face. A deeper profile provides more usable hitting area, a help from the rough.

• Step Sole. A refined sole design reduces turf interaction for cleaner strikes.

The club has also caught on quickly in Nishimura's home market. Callaway says it is now the best-selling fairway wood in Japan.

Why it matters for amateurs

Nishimura's issue wasn't a lack of distance. It was stopping power. That is the same challenge many amateurs face with long approach shots, whether it's a mid-amateur who has swapped long irons for fairway woods or a senior player who struggles to get enough height to hold a firm green.

A tour winner who deliberately gave up spin-reducing technology in favor of a club built to stop the ball is a useful reminder: at the top of the bag, the right answer isn't always the club that goes farthest.
