Matthew Lin stood alone under par when it mattered most.
The Yale junior and golf team captain closed with a 1-over 71 Sunday to win the 81st Bay Regional Championship at Tilden Park Golf Course, finishing at 3-under 207 and three strokes clear of the field in Berkeley, California.
Lin, who has won two college tournaments as co-medalist alongside John Daly III and 2024 Walker Cupper Jacob Modleski, opened with back-to-back 68s to seize control early in the 54-hole stroke play event. His final-round 71 was enough to hold off the competition on a week when par proved elusive for everyone else in the field.
The victory marks Lin's return to the winner's circle in Northern California amateur golf. Before heading east to New Haven, he competed regularly in NCGA events, and Sunday's performance at Tilden Park — a municipal layout known for its tree-lined fairways and elevation changes in the Berkeley hills — showed the polish he's added to his game at the collegiate level.
Lin is entering his third year at Yale, where he serves as team captain. His two college victories have come in elite company, sharing titles with Daly, son of the two-time major champion, and Modleski, who represented the United States in last year's Walker Cup at St. Andrews.
The Bay Regional Championship, which celebrated its 81st playing this year, has produced a varied list of champions in recent seasons. Nicholas Evans won in 2023 with a 1-under 209 total, while the senior division has been claimed by players like Don Viboch and Scott Haag in recent years.
This year's Men's Championship division featured a 36-hole cut to the low 30 players and ties after two rounds, with the senior divisions playing 36 holes without a cut. Lin's wire-to-wire performance left no doubt about the outcome, as his consistency across three days separated him from a field that struggled to stay below par on Tilden Park's challenging layout.
For Lin, it's a strong summer showing ahead of his captaincy duties this fall in the Ivy League.
