With closing 65, Stormo finishes off LNGA Amateur victory

Stormo becomes the second Kent State player to win a major summer amateur title.

Ultimately, Karoline Stormo had too big a lead for anyone to catch her over the final 18 holes at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn. Stormo, who will be a senior at Kent State in the fall, won the LNGA Amateur by a stunning seven shots on Thursday after closing with 65.

You might say Stormo, from Norway, marched to this title with authority. After entering the day with a four-shot lead, Stormo played her first 10 holes in 5 under par. She mixed in two bogeys – but also three more birdies – on the back nine to pull away.

Stormo’s round of 65 was the lowest of the championship. In fact, she tied her own low round, posted on Day 1 at the GC of Tennessee.

With the victory, Stormo becomes the second Kent State player to earn a major summer amateur victory. Marissa Kirkwood, who tied for 10th this week, won the Donna Andrews Invitational last month.

Behind Stormo, Lauren Hartlage was solo second at 7 under. The Louisville player had a closing 67 but could still never really apply pressure to Stormo.

Florida State’s Amanda Doherty was third at 5 under, followed by Amari Avery, the 15-year-old who recently won the California Women’s Amateur Championship.
