Wills wins Columbus TOC; senior divisions end in playoff

Matt Wills won the overall division of the CDGA's Tournament of Champions, while the senior divisions ended in sudden death

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 3, 2018) – Matt Wills came out on top of the Columbus District Golf Association Tournament of Champions on Wednesday, and with shots to spare. Wills put together a bogey-free 4-under 68 at Lakes Golf & Country Club and won by two shots.

Wills, who plays out of Jefferson Country Club, had three birdies over his first nine holes. One more birdie at No. 16 got him to 68. Andrew Montooth and Michael Kimmet tied for second with rounds of 2-under 70 in the one-day event. Steve Mayes was fourth at 1 under.

The senior division included a much more exciting finish, with Kenneth Weixel prevailing on the third hole of sudden death. Weixel, who plays out of the Santaluz Club, and David Schneider, who plays out of Worthington Hills Country Club, both tied at 3-under 69. Ultimately, Weixel, the 1993 Columbus District Amateur champion, walked away with the trophy.

The super senior division also ended in a playoff. George Haag had to defeat Randy Kauffman and Terry McCurdy in sudden death, and did so on the first extra hole. All three men finished at 2-over 74. Starting on No. 10, Haag had four birdies over his first nine, but climbed back into contention with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7
