Williams, 19, wins West Virginia Amateur in a playoff

The Georgia Southern wins are piling up this summer. Mason Williams, an upcoming sophomore for the Eagles, added his name to the list on Friday by winning the West Virginia Amateur in a three-hole playoff.

Williams, from Bridgeport, Va., went full speed ahead in the final round of the 72-hole event at the Meadows Course and Old White TPC. Playing at the Meadows, Williams opened with back-to-back birdies. He had three more birdies on the front and turned in 31. He finished the day with a 6-under 64, which was the lowest round of any competitor.

After starting the day six shots off the pace, suddenly Williams was 2 under for the week and part of a three-way tie for first. He and Philip Reale and Woody Woodward entered a three-hole aggregate playoff. Williams won by one.

At 19, Williams becomes the youngest winner of the event since 1966. The spoils for this one are also big. Courtesy of his state amateur title, Williams earned a spot in the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic.

Already this summer, two of Williams’ teammates have won major amateur events. Ben Carr won the Southeastern Amateur in June and Jake Maples won the Chattanooga Choo Choo last month.
