West Texas Amateur: Michael Carnes completes wire-to-wire victory

Michael Carnes completed a wire-to-wire victory to capture the 98th West Texas Amateur, closing with a 3-under 69 on Sunday at Midland Country Club to finish at 15-under 201 and claim a four-shot victory. The New Braunfels native opened the championship with a tournament-best 65 before following with a bogey-free 67 that featured an eagle and a blistering back-nine 30, giving him control of the championship from start to finish. The victory also puts the Carnes family deeper into tournament history, as Michael joins his brother Casey as a West Texas Amateur champion.

"It's really special to join Casey as a champion here," Carnes told the Texas Golf Association. "This tournament has so much history, and to have both of our names on that trophy means a lot to our family." Carnes never relinquished the lead, while Bryce Womack of San Antonio finished runner-up at 11-under 205. Jack Hollingshed of Dallas and John Barnes of Midland shared third at 10-under 206, while John Beringer of San Antonio vaulted into fifth after firing a bogey-free final-round 65, one of the week's lowest rounds.
