Washington went 2 under at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course while the hosts went 1 under.
The Huskies counted three rounds of par or better to start the event. Noah Woolsey and Jan Schneider both contributed rounds of 2-under 68 while Henry Lee had a steady even-par 70. Washington also counted a 2-over 72 from Paul Margolis.
Washington is chasing its first win since the second start of the season, when the team won its own Husky Invitational.
Two teams are tied for third, including USC and Cal. Both are 6 over, which is eight shots off the pace.
Santa Clara, Oregon and Colorado are tied for fifth another shot back.
For the second time this spring, Stanford also entered a B team in the field. While the B squad threatened to overtake the A team at the Prestige at PGA West earlier this spring, Stanford B slid down the leaderboard at the Goodwin with an opening 17-over 297 and is 21st.
