VIDEO: Corby Segal claims SCGA Mid-Amateur

Corby Segal wins by one after a third round even-par at Brentwood Country Club

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 12, 2016)--A third round even-par 72 was good enough for Corby Segal (-2) as he captured the 33rd SCGA Mid-Amateur by one over Sean Birren (-1). Segal and Birren were the only two players to finish under-par.

"I've joked around a lot about winning my first crystal from the SCGA, but it sure does feel good," Segal said the SCGA after the round. "I've worked my butt off for it."

Segal approached the 18th hole at Brentwood Country Club needing par to secure victory but he certainly didn't make it easy on himself. The Santa Clarita, CA resident needed to make an 18-foot putt on the final hole to secure the win. It was his second SCGA victory.

The final round 72 was Segal's second consecutive even-par round following a 2-under-par 70 in the first round. Segal reached 3-under-par but bogeyed No. 17 meaning he needed par on the final hole.

Segal's final day scorecard included three birdies and three pars. Most the circles and squares came on holes 6-9 when he went bogey, birdie, birdie, bogey. His only birdie on the back nine came on No. 14.

Sean Birren (La Verne, CA) was part of the three- way tie atop the leaderboard at the start of the day and led by a stroke as the leaders turned to the homeward nine. Birren played well on the opening nine shooting a 1-under-par 35 but struggled down the stretch. Playing with the lead Birren was two over on his way in and finished a stroke back and in second place after a closing 73.

Danny Wax (Marina Del Rey, CA) also began the day tied for the lead but fell back a bit and finished T3 with a score of 1-over-par. Brian Edick (Valencia, CA) also finished T3 while Ken Cruz (Fullerton, CA) was 2-over- par and in fifth.
