USC Holds Off Cal to Win Western Intercollegiate

Southern California captures the team title at Pasatiempo, while Jack Buchanan leads a strong Trojan performance

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Southern California leaned on one decisive stretch of golf to claim the 79th Western Intercollegiate, closing out a tense finish at Pasatiempo Golf Club with a one-shot victory over California.

The Trojans finished at 13-under, their advantage forged during a commanding second round that ultimately separated them from the field. A tournament-best 16-under effort in Round 2 gave USC the cushion it needed, even as California mounted a steady final-round push. The Golden Bears closed with an even-par round but came up just short.

Behind them, UNLV and BYU shared third at 8-under, while Arizona and Stanford tied for fifth at 6-under in a tightly packed leaderboard that reflected Pasatiempo’s demand for precision.

If the team race was defined by control, the individual battle delivered pure drama.

USC’s Jack Buchanan and Stanford’s Dean Greyserman finished regulation tied at 10-under, setting up a historic finish.

Buchanan looked in command for much of the week. He opened with a 67, then broke the tournament open with a blistering 62 in the second round to build a sizable lead. A steady closing effort was enough to get him into the clubhouse at 10-under.

Greyserman, however, produced the round of the championship. Starting the final day well back, the Stanford senior surged with a brilliant 8-under 62 to wipe out the deficit and draw level.

The two were ultimately declared co-champions—the first shared title in the tournament’s history.
