GALLATIN, Tenn. — Seth Smith, an amateur from Clarksville, fired a 5-under 67 Thursday to seize the 36-hole lead at the Tennessee State Open Championship, holding a one-shot advantage over two professionals heading into Friday's final round at Tennessee Grasslands Golf and Country Club.
Smith posted rounds of 68-67 to reach 9-under 135 on the Foxland Links layout, one stroke clear of Adam Forgey of Crossville and Patton Samuels, also from Clarksville. The presence of two players from Tennessee's fifth-largest city atop the leaderboard — one amateur, one pro — adds a compelling local storyline to the chase for the state's most prestigious professional-amateur championship.
