It was a rainy start to the final round of the 35th Louisiana Senior Amateur Championship this morning, but as the skies cleared up, the sun came out, and the humidity was not playing around.
Todd Doss of Mandeville, La., claimed his first Louisiana Senior Amateur Championship title at Ellendale Country Club. He started the day tied at the top of the leaderboard with 2019 and 2020 Senior Amateur Champion Robby McWilliams of Benton.
He pulled through and shot a final round of 1-under 71, putting him at 5-under for the championship and securing the one-shot win.
It was an eventful round for this pair, who were also playing with Eric Lavespere of Monroe. Doss and McWilliams stayed neck and neck the entire time, trading off being in the lead or tied up.
As the pair left the 17th green tied up going into No. 18, McWilliams had an unfortunate tee shot, resulting in a ball in the water, earning him a penalty stroke. After taking a drop and then hitting his next shot, he met Doss on the green. With a stellar finish, Doss sank his putt on No. 18 to win himself the championship title by one stroke over McWilliams.
All players in the final group had phenomenal three rounds, but third-place finisher Jeff Calloway of Baton Rouge cannot be ignored.
Calloway worked his way to the top of the leaderboard by shooting a 68 in his final round, earning himself a trophy. He had a phenomenal back nine, making five birdies and going bogey-free.
