Texas holds slim lead over Virginia at U.S. Collegiate

One of America's top collegiate golfers, senior Denny McCarthy of Virginia, posted 63 on Friday and 72 on Saturday to lead individually

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (Oct. 18, 2014) — Day one of the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Lakeside Course of the Golf Club of Georgia saw University of Virginia senior Denny McCarthy, a 2014 World Amateur Team member for the United States, shoot a nine-under par 63 to open the event and give his Cavaliers an early lead. On Saturday, however, the University of Texas moved into the lead thanks to senior Kramer Hickok's four-under 68. At 138, Hickok is tied for third and three back of McCarthy, who posted a 72 on Saturday and still leads by three. In second place is Derek Bard, also of Virginia, at 137. Virginia's team is just one shot behind Texas while Texas A&M is three behind the Longhorns. The field is stacked with some of the top collegiate teams in the nation, including No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Stanford, No. 8 Auburn, No. 9 Texas, and No. 11 LSU. Overall, 10 Top-25 teams are in Georgia for the three-day event.
