They would rise to the top much like the foggy conditions finally did, with the opening round delayed over five hours yesterday.
In the final round, the fog made another unwanted appearance, delaying play until 1 p.m. After an attempt to get going, visibility became unplayable, resulting in just round one being completed and the championship cut back to 18 holes.
Teaster and Cloninger captured the 65-plus Division on the strength of nine birdies and one eagle scattered over their strong 64, 8-under round. Right behind them at 7-under were the team of Todd Brown and Rick Alspaugh of Winston-Salem, N.C., firing a 63 that included six of seven birdies over Holes Nos. 8-14.
Raymond Davis and John Bunn of Apex, N.C., and Raleigh, N.C., tied for first in the 70+ Division with Tim Pope and Roger Page of Spartanburg, S.C., and Duncan, S.C., at 6-under each. Unfortunately, with the weather issues, playoffs couldn’t be conducted, and both teams will share the title.
Tied in third behind the winning groups were William Boles and Robert Desjardins of Wilson, N.C., and Matthews, N.C., and Don Slater and Rickey Luzar of Durham, N.C., Pinehurst, N.C., each shooting 5-under, 67 rounds.
