Steve Harwell takes the lead heading into final round of SOS Spring Classic

Harwell shot the low round of the tournament with a 5-under 67 to take a commanding five-shot lead

Two rounds are complete at the 17th Spring Classic on the Slammer & Squire course at World Golf Village. Foggy conditions were again present early on Wednesday morning but gave way to wind gusts around 20mph as the day progressed.

Heavy rain after Tuesday’s round softened the course overnight and players again took advantage of scoring opportunities.

Steve Harwell, of Mooresville, NC, now leads the Senior Division by five shots after posting the low round of the tournament thus far with a 5-under 67 that featured seven birdies against two bogeys. After his first round of 2-under 70, Harwell stands at 7-under overall. Todd Doss, of Mandeville, LA, and Craig Hurlbert, of The Woodlands, TX, are tied for second place at 2-under. Doug Hanzel, of Savannah, GA, is in fourth at 1-under par.

James Pearson, of Charlotte, NC, continues to lead the Super Senior Division at 2-under overall after his second round of 2-over 74. Duff Wagner, of Greenville, SC, is right on Pearson’s heels, just one shot back. Wagner found red figures on day two with a 1-under 71 to follow up yesterday’s even par round.

Todd Brown, of Winston Salem, NC, also shot 71 on Wednesday and is now at 2-over, in third place.

Marc Fried, of Solon, OH, leads the pack in the Legend Division at even par after two rounds. Fried has posted back-to-back rounds of 72 to lead a trio of contenders who are just one shot back, including Edward Turner of Richardson, TX, Mark Weston of Windermere, FL, and Don Donatoni of West Chester, PA.

Sam Robinson, of Jacksonville Beach, FL, grabbed the lead in the Super Legend Division after a second round of 1-over 73. Robinson sits one shot ahead of his former Virginia Tech teammate, Bill Engel, of St. Augustine. Frank Polizzi, of Plymouth Meeting, PA, is in third place at 6-over par.

The final round gets underway tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with a Shotgun Start.
