Stanford shatters team and individual records at Gunrock Invite

Card's 34-under 542 sets a new 36-hole school record by nine strokes; Heck set a new school record for 36 holes by an individual

The top-ranked Stanford Cardinal enjoyed a record-setting day at the Gunrock Invitational on Monday.

The Cardinal opened the tournament with a 23-under score of 265 in its morning round to shatter the school's 18-holes scoring record by 10 strokes and then followed up in the afternoon by turning in an 11-under 277, which tied for the fifth-best round in school history. At 34-under 542, Stanford established a new 36-hole school record by nine strokes.

Sophomore Rachel Heck turned in rounds of 63 and 68 on the par-72, 6067-yard Del Paso Country Club layout at at 13-under 131, set a new school record for an individual, surpassing Rose Zhang's and Mariah Stackhouse's previous record of 12-under.

Heck's opening round of 63 included 11 birdies, nine coming over the final 15 holes to match her best round of her collegiate career and tie for the second-best round in program history. Just to prove she's human, Heck made a double bogey on the second hole.

All told, Heck had 17 birdies and 16 pars against just two bogeys and one double-bogey over her 36 holes on Monday. At 13-under 131, she holds a three-stroke lead over teammate Rose Zhang heading into the final 18 holes of play on Tuesday. Zhang played two bogey-free rounds, making 10 birdies to go along with 26 pars.

At 34-under 542, Stanford enjoys an 18-shot lead over Pac-12 rival Washington with one round remaining.
