Gann used a two-birdie, one-bogey performance on a beautiful Saturday to make gains on the rest of the field and post a 5-under-par 139 (68-71) total score. Taylor Smith is closest to Gann - and the only other player in red numbers through 54 holes - at 1-under-par 143 (72-71). Two players are in at even-par 144, including Kyle Stiles (72-72) and Bob Royak (73-71).
Now that two rounds are complete, 71 players at 9-over-par 153 and better make the cut and will play in the final round on Sunday.
The final round will get underway on Sunday beginning at 8:00 a.m. with the leaders going off at 9:50 a.m.
Round one of the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship is in the books and Stan Gann Jr., leads the field at 4-under-par 68. The 37th edition of this competition is taking place at Piedmont Driving Club, May 18-20.
Gann's day started on hole 10 and over the first nine holes he made three birdies and a bogey to turn at 2-under. His final nine holes were bogey-free and with two more birdies he notched his opening-round 68. Gann is looking for his first victory at the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship.
