Southwestern Men's Amateur: Jared Abercrombie fends off a charging Miles Kuhl to win

The Santa Clara transfer from Simi Valley, Calif., started the day with a 3-shot lead and held off a relentless opponent

Jared Abercrombie never trailed on the final day of the 110th Southwestern Amateur, but that doesn't mean the walk to the trophy was easy.

The Santa Clara transfer from Simi Valley, Calif., started Saturday with a three-shot lead and spent most of the afternoon fending off a relentless charge from San Diego State commit Miles Kuhl before closing with a 1-under 72 to win at 14-under-par 274.

Kuhl, who began the day four shots behind, wasted little time applying pressure. The Boulder, Colo., native birdied three of his first five holes to cut the deficit to one and turned what initially appeared to be a comfortable Sunday into a back-nine duel.

"It was a good battle. He definitely turned it on early," Abercrombie said after the round.

Kuhl briefly cooled off with bogeys at Nos. 7 and 9, only to erase both with the shot of the tournament at the drivable par-4 10th, holing a bunker shot for eagle. Two holes later, after Abercrombie made bogey at the par-3 12th, the tournament was tied and effectively reduced to a two-man race.

Abercrombie responded when it mattered most.

He regained the lead with his first birdie of the day at the short par-4 14th. Both players birdied the par-5 16th, setting up a pivotal moment at No. 17. Kuhl striped a driver into position and had a wedge in hand, but his birdie attempt slid past the hole, leaving Abercrombie with a one-shot advantage heading to the final hole.

The finishing hole at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course provided one final test.

After finding the left side of the fairway, Abercrombie faced 178 yards to the back-left hole location. His approach landed safely and fed toward the pin, leaving a routine two-putt par to secure the victory.

"I had 155 to cover the bunker, and I was telling myself to cover that and it would feed down there," Abercrombie said. "The shot was exactly what fit my eye."

The closing stretch tested every part of his game.

"The whole back nine was really stressful," he said. "[Kuhl] holing it out on 10 was an unbelievable shot to get within one. I feel like it was a two-man battle from there, and I'm just glad to pull through on the last two holes."

Kuhl's challenge ended with a bogey on the 18th after missing long, leaving him alone in second at 12 under. Malaysia's Nateeshvar Anatha Ganesh posted the low round of the day, a 7-under 65, to finish third at 11 under. Austin Krahn of Christina Lake, British Columbia, was fourth at 10 under, while defending champion Hartel Grewal and first-round leader RJ Arone shared fifth at 9 under.

Abercrombie credited consistency and course management for his breakthrough victory.

"I didn't have a penalty all week," he said. "Finding the right spots on the greens was key. If you can do that, keep the ball in play, and give yourself enough looks, they're bound to fall."

The win is the biggest amateur title of Abercrombie's career and comes after a spring in which he frequently found himself in contention during collegiate competition.

"I think this whole college season was about getting comfortable with being in contention," he said. "Just keep knocking on the door and eventually have the opportunity to be in control of a tournament. Starting with a three-shot lead today, it was mine to win or mine to lose, and I'm glad I was able to pull it off."
